COMMON LABORATORY

TOOLS, APPARATUSES &

EQUIPMENT
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
At the end of the lesson, the students
should be able to identify and describe
different laboratory instruments.
FOUR PICS …
ONE WORD …
______
_________
_______
_________
Why is there a need to
know the proper use or
uses of the Laboratory
Instrument?
TEST TUBE

• It is to hold, mix, or heat

small quantities of solid
or liquid chemicals
TEST TUBE BRUSH

• It is used to easily clean

the inside of a test tube.
TEST TUBE HOLDER

• It is used to hold test

tube while being
heated.
TEST TUBE RACK

• It I used to hold test

tubes upright while
observing reactions or
when they are not used.
CRUCIBLE TONG

• It is used to hold
apparatuses (crucibles,
flasks, evaporating
dishes) when they are
hot.
IRON STAND, IRON RING & IRON
CLAMP

• It is used to support items

being heated.

• Clamps or rings can be

used so that other items
may also be placed
above them
BEAKER

• It is used to hold and

heat large amount of
liquids.
ERLENMEYER FLASK

• It is used to heat and

store liquids.

• Its bottom is wider so it

will heat up quicker
because of the greater
surface area exposed to
heat.
VOLUMETRIC FLASK

• It is used to measure an
specific volume of
liquids.

• It is used mostly in
preparing solutions.
FLORENCE FLASK

• It is used to heat
substances that needs
to be heated evenly.

• It is mostly used in
distillation experiments.
DISTILLING FLASK

• It is used to separate liquid

mixtures by distillation
based on the difference in
boiling points.
GRADUATED CYLINDER

• It used for measuring

volume of liquids.

• It has various calibration.

MORTAR AND PESTLE

• It is used to pulverize or
grind solids into powders
to dissolve the solids
better.
EVAPORATING DISH

• It is used to heat and

evaporate liquids.
CRUCIBLE AND COVER

• It is used to heat small

amount of substances in
very high temperature.

• It is supported by a clay
triangle.
PIPESTEM TRIANGLE OR
CLAY TRIANGLE

• It is used to hold crucible

when being heated.

• It is placed over the

tripod or iron ring.
WIRE GAUZE

• It is used to support
beakers, crucible and
flasks during heating
THERMOMETER

• It is used to measure the

temperature of solid,
liquid and gas
substances.
STIRRING ROD

• It is used to stir solutions

to dissolve substances.

• Sometimes it is used to
transfer liquids from one
container to another.
SPATULA

• It is used for transferring

small amounts of solid
from one container to
another.
PIPET

• It is used for moving

small amount of liquid
from one container to
another.
REAGENT BOTTLE
• It is use for storage and
displaying substances
when not in used.

• Chemicals that are

highly sensitive to
sunlight are placed in
the amber bottle (dark)
to avoid exposure or
reaction.
BUNSEN BURNER

• It is used for heating and

exposing items to flame.

• It is connected to a gas
source or gas outlet by
rubber tubbing.
FUNNEL

• It is used to transfer liquids

into another container to
avoid spillage.
CORK AND CORK BORRER

• It is used for sealing test

tubes and flasks.

• It is used to make a hole

in the cork or stopper
ALCOHOL LAMP

• It is used to produce an
open flame.

• Denatured alcohol is
used to produce flame.

• It can be an alternative
source of flame if burner
is not available.
MICROSCOPE

• It is an optical instrument
used for viewing very
small objects, such as
cells and
microorganisms.
FUME HOOD

• It is a type of ventilation
system that primarily
functions to provide
protection against toxic
fumes, vapors and dusts.
AUTOCLAVE

• It is used in medical
applications to perform
sterilization by using heat
pressure.
ANALYTICAL BALANCE

• It is a class of balance
designed to measure
small mass in the sub-
milligram range.
CENTRIFUGE MACHINE

• It is used to separate
contents of suspension
mixtures (solid and liquid
contents) such as blood.
