which consisted of “hemp-fabric trousers” and
“stripped cotton coat”.

 He studied painting under the Agustin
Saez, a famous Spanish painter.

 He also studied under Romualdo


Teodoro de Jesus a noted Filipino
sculptor.
 He carved an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary on a
piece of batikuling, a very hard Philippine wood using
just a pocket knife.

 He carved an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus which


is requested by Fr. Leonart.

 The Jesuits fathers were amazed at the beauty and


grace of the images most especially Father Leonart.
 Rizal became a member of Marian Congregation in
which he served as its secretary.

 He regularly attended mass in the morning before


going to the class.

Important Dates in the Life of Rizal
January 6, 1878 Rizal returns to Manila to resume his studies;
takes a course in Surveying at the Ateneo and at
the same time taking up Philosophy and Letters at
the University of Santo Tomas.
May 21, 1878 Rizal passes the examination for surveyors but did
not received his diploma for being under aged.
June 2, 1878 Enrolled in the Medicine course at the University
of Santo Tomas
November 22, Rizal received an award a silver pen for his
1879 winning poem A La Juventud Filipina.
1880 Rizal failed to salute the lieutenant of the Civil
Guard and he gets whipped.
April 13, 1880 Rizal’s received the first prize for his play, El
Consejo de los Dioses.
December 8, 1880 Rizal’s work Junto Al Pasig is presented at the
auditorium of the Ateneo de Manila
November 25, 1881 Rizal was granted the title of Surveyor
