Introduction:
Internet of Things
Nearly all of the data available on the Internet today was first captured and created by
human beings.
The problem is, people have limited time, attention, and accuracy, which means they are
not very good at capturing data about things in the real world
so, if we had computers that knew everything there was to know about things, using data
they gathered without any help from us, we would be able to track and count everything
and greatly reduce waste, loss and cost and this is what gave birth to “Internet of Things”.
What is IoT?
Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of devices which can sense, accumulate and transfer
data over the internet without any human intervention.
It is internetworking of physical devices, vehicles, buildings and other items- embedded
with electronics, software, and network connectivity that enable these to collect and
exchange data.

Why IoT is required:
• IoT will expand and improve that data by connecting billions of devices
capable of immediately sharing, receiving, and analyzing massive amounts
of it to better meet business needs and improve decision-making.
• The immediacy of the data collected by IoT devices means faster analysis
and distribution of that information.

Architecture of IoT:
1. Things:
i) Various IoT things which are connected to each other and
transmitting data every second .
ii) The IoT things must support RFID, Wi-Fi, NFC or other Such
technology which connects it to internet.
2. Network:
i) The network layer that represents the network of IoT
enabled things which are capable of transmitting.
ii) Network involves communication devices which helps the
things in communicating and channelizing the receive data in right direction.
3. Cloud Storage:
i) In Cloud computing cloud is nothing but a remote storage
location.
ii) Cloud computing refers to storing and retrieving any type of data over
the Internet from data center.

Continue….
ii) Cloud computing provides necessary tools and services to create IoT
applications.
iii) Cloud helps in achieving efficiency, accuracy, speed in implementing
IoT applications.
iv) Cloud helps IoT application development but IoT is not a cloud
computing.
4. Analytical Engine:
i) This layer employs different data science and analytics techniques
including machine learning algorithms to make sense of the data and enable
corrective action.
ii) For small amount of data, traditional technique can work but for
huge amount of data employing big data analytics.

IoT Enabled Application for Educational
Institution:

• Smart Attendance Module

• Smart Garbage Collection
• Smart Environment Management
• Smart Discipline Maintenance

Smart Attendance Module

• In the traditional system, attendance of students is marked in the beginning of a

lecture by concerned teacher either manually or in online fashion.
• In both the ways, the teacher is to call each student by name or roll number in
the class and mark his presence or absence.
• In an IoT enabled attendance system by make using RFID working is explained.

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification):
• It is a technology which is working on radio frequency or radio waves so this
technology is used to automatically identify the object or tracking the objects.
• RFID SYSMTEM is divided into
i) RFID READER
ii) RFID TAG
* This RFID reader is continuously sending radio waves
so whenever the object is in the range of the reader.
* RFID tag could be a active tag, it could be a passive
tag and also could be a semi passive tag.
* Now the passive tag do not have their own power
supply.
* So this passive tag relies on the radio waves which is coming from the RFID
reader for the source of energy.
* While in case of active and semi passive tag, they used to have their own power supply.

Title of the Project 11
Smart Garbage Collection:

8/30/2019 Title: An approach for Advancement in Educational Institution 12

1) As in smart attendance module , two important components are required for smart garbage
collection.

2) RFID enabled bins and a Server with RFID reader antennas and Application Software. The bins
tagged with RFID devices can send required signals to the server regarding the status of the bin.

3) Based on the status of the bin, server can issue commands or warnings for the garbage collector.

4) Suppose the garbage bin is crossing the limit of volume of garbage it can store, so it is time to
inform garbage collector to empty the bin.

5) Some other types of information can also be transmitted which can instigate the cleaning or
repair of the bins.

Smart Environment Management

• There are varieties of smart application in a smart institution. Let us discuss

here about some important applications which will be helpful in students .
• Environmental factors play very important role in the growth of an
educational institution. Two environmental aspects are taken care of in this
module.
1. Lightning in the classrooms and laboratories.
2. Temperature in the classrooms and laboratories.

• RFID tags with sensor capabilities can be installed in rooms and

classrooms which can periodically sense the intensity of light and
temperature and send the sensed information to server which can
issue commands to smart lights, fans, heaters and Air Conditioners
accordingly .
• Such environment will check any kind of disturbance which could be
caused due to poor environmental conditions in the rooms and laboratories.
• Temperature sensors are placed throughout the class room this senses the
temperature level and auto adjust the level of A/C or speed of a fan.

Smart Discipline Management:

• As students and teachers can be duly tagged with RFID tags, it is very
easy to find location of a tag holder. Some of the points which can be
brought into notice in automated way include the following:
1. Teacher not present in the class.
2. Students accumulating in a particular area of the institute which
is not meant for accumulation.
3. Noise level in a classroom or laboratory crossing a pre- specified limit.
4. On finding any such situation in the department,
announcements can be made for teachers or students to take measures
accordingly.
• In a smart class room each chair of a student is fixed with a RFID reader a
pressure sensor is attached with the chair by using this technique we can
identify whether a student is inside the class room or not.

Conclusion:

• It is carrying little slow in India but it is going to affect us all in coming

future.
• As more and more systems connect to IoT, large amount of data generates
which can be handled with the use of other emerging technologies .
• IoT can provide more benefits in terms of reduced turnaround time
and increased throughput.
• An IoT enabled Educational Institution can provide much better
services in an automated way.
• Many such IoT enabled applications can be developed and deployed
for making our society better.
