地胆草(学名: Elephantopus

scaber L. )是菊科地胆草属直立草
本植物。根状茎平卧或斜升,具多
数纤维状根;茎二歧分枝,粗壮,
被白色粗硬毛。单叶,大都基生,
长园状披针形、匙形或长圆状匙
形,长 5-18 厘米,宽达 2-4 厘米,
前端钝圆,基部渐狭;茎生叶少而
小。头状花序,多数密集成复头状
花序;每个头状花序约有小花 4
朵,全为两性花,花冠筒状,淡紫

长,基部宽阔;有棱,被白色柔

脉,被长糙毛和腺点;总苞狭,长 8-
10 毫米,宽约 2 毫米;总苞片绿色或
上端紫红色,长圆状披针形,顶端渐
尖而具刺尖,具 1 或 3 脉,被短糙毛
和腺点,外层长 4-5 毫米,内层长约
10 毫米;花 4 个,淡紫色或粉红色,
花冠长 7-9 毫米,管部长 4-5 毫米;

Description:
Elephant's foot is an erect,
perennial herb growing up to 80
cm tall. A popular medicinal
herb in Africa, where it is often
gathered from the wild. The
leaves are also sometimes eaten
locally.

Useage and potential:
Medicinal
The plant is widely used as a
medicinal herb in the tropics. It is
anthelmintic, diaphoretic, diuretic,
emmenagogue, emollient,
febrifuge and tonic. It is used to
treat conditions such as asthma,
coughs and pulmonary diseases;
dyspepsia, diarrhoea and
Elephantopus dysentery; oedema; urethral
scaber discharges and venereal diseases.
A decoction is used to treat fungal
skin diseases.
Useage and potential:
Medicinal
• The roots are diuretic, febrifuge
and tonic. They are used fresh to
arrest vomiting. Either pounded
or in decoction, they are also used
as a remedy for leucorrhoea,
anaemia, cough, malaria and as a
tonic during parturition.
• The leaves are recommended for
Elephantopus application to the abdomen to
scaber treat dropsy. They are also used as
an anthelmintic and aphrodisiac,
and to treat cough, sprue and
diarrhoea.
