WHAT IS CHILD LABOUR?
• Child labour refers to the employment of children in any work that deprives children
of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is
mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful.

• This practice is considered exploitative by many international organisations.

Legislation across the world prohibit child labour

• In developing countries, with high poverty and poor schooling opportunities, child labour
is still prevalent. Child labour forms an intrinsic part of pre-industrial economies.in pre-
industrial societies, there is rarely a concept of childhood in the modern sense. Children
often begin to actively participate in activities such as child rearing, hunting and farming
as soon as they are competent. In many societies, children as young as 13 are seen as
adults and engage in the same activities as adults.
CAUSES OF CHILD LABOUR
POVERTY
PARENTAL ILLITTERCAY AND NEED FOR INCOME
OVER POPULATION
LACK OF SCHOOLS FOR STUDY
WEAK LAWS TO PROTECT
ADULT UNEMPLOYMENT AND URBANIZTION
LACK OF EDUCATION AND EXPOSURE
WRONG INTENTION OF FACTORIES
ONE in every six children aged 5to 17 worldwide is exploited by
child labour
61% in Asia , 32% in Africa and 7% in Latin America, 1% in
U.S.A. , Canada, Europe, and other wealthy nations.

CHILD LABOUR IN INDIA
Burning shame for India!!!:
 The Indian government’s 2011 census records about 4.3
million children between age of five and 14 years are
working in hazardous and non-hazardous jobs. A damning
report by International Labour Organization is
claiming a much higher number.
 There are 22.87 million working children in India
between 15-18 years.
 As per 2011 Census, 1 in 11 children are working in
India (5-18 years)
 80% of the child labour in India is concentrated in
rural areas
 168 million children are estimated to be engaged in
Child Labour around the world (ILO, 2012) that means
every 17th working child in the world is in India
PROHIBITION AND REGULATION OF CHILD LABOUR
Although child labour has emerged and EXPANDED at an unbelievably swift rate, the UNICEF(of
the UNO) along with the respective governments have implemented and launched numerous
laws and have undertook strict and firm steps for the prevention of child labour .
MAJOR ACTS AMONG THEM INCLUDE:

The Factories Act of 1948

the Mines Act of 1952
The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act of 1986
The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) of Children Act, 2000
The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act of 2009
• THE UNICEF and ILO PLAY THE MOST PROMINENT ROLE IN RESTRICTING THE
ADVANCEMENT OF CHILD LABOUR. The International Labour Organization (ILO)
launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent
of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 12 June, the
World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society,
as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers
and what can be done to help them.

• The UNICEF tries to prevent and prohibit child labour by :-

 Reducing illiteracy and spreading education by opening various schools, providing
shelter to the poor and distributing various eatables to them.
 At last they try to ensure every child to live freely and be safe from hunger and
malnutrition.
 To donate funds in NGO’s working for the rehabilitation of
street children
 To contact NGO’s and make them aware about child labour
happening in our society
 To make the rural people aware about the benefits of
education
 To provide free education to the orphans
 To start CAMPAIGN AGAINST CHLD LABOUR
 To help the government to stop child labour
