Bipolar Junction Transistor
Configurations
Transistors can be configured in three different
modes with one pair of terminals for the input
and another pair for the output. These
configurations are:
1. Common emitter
2. Common collector
3. Common base
Common Emitter
In the common emitter configuration, the
input terminal is the base while the output
terminal is the collector and the emitter is
common to both the input and the output as
shown in figure below. The current gain for
this configuration is given by • input current IB
output current IC
Common Collector
• In the common collector configuration, the
input terminal is the base while the output
terminal is the emitter and the collector is
common to both the input and the output as
shown in figure below. The current gain for
this configuration is given by • input current IE
output current IB
Common Base
Output equation
VCC = (Ic + IB )Rc + VCE
The collector current and the base currents flow through the collector
Resistor
input equation,
Vc = IB RB + VBE
3. Base Bias with Collector and Emitter
Feedback
• input equation
Vcc = Ic Rc + VBE + IB RB + IERE
• the output equation
Vcc = (Ic + IB )Rc + VCE + IE RE
Example 4
Determine the Ic(sat),VCE and Vc. In the
circuit below. Take VBE = 0.7V
4 Voltage Divider Bias
From the circuit diagram in figure below, the
voltage divider bias is analyzed as follows.
• From the potential (voltage) divider equation
• VB = VccR2
R1 R 2
VB = VBE + VE
• the output equation
VCC= IC RC+VCE +IERE
• The base voltage is set by the resistors R1 and R2
thus the effect of the transistor forward gain is
reduced .The D.C bias is independent of β.
