INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

This study is about how the graduating senior high school

students of Saint Vincent Academy of Maragusan,
Inc.(SVAM, Inc.) spend their vacant time.
The inappropriate behavior of the students during their
leisure time urges us to conduct this study. Finding what
really the students do during leisure time will draw
conclusions on how to manifest the decency of students
inside the school premises.
Consequently, they can manage their time and do a worth
some activity. Since they are graduating students, they
serve as models and examples to lower grades. It is
necessary to correct the inappropriate behavior that
can influence the lower grades the accurate example of
a good graduating Vincentian. This will be a great help for
the students to discipline themselves and avoid
tolerating their misconduct.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study will give answers to the following questions:

How do graduating students spend their vacant period?

What are the effective means of spending vacant time essentially?

Why is it essential to have effective means of spending time to suffice

the proper decency of students inside the campus?
HYPOTHESIS
Students liked to use electronic devices, such as mobile
phone for texting people inside or outside classroom,
playing electronic games, surfing webpage, or listening to
music which are the effects of having and allowing them to
bring cellular phone during vacant time. Some are sleeping
and chit-chatting with their friends. Others are also busy
doing their homework, projects and other paper works,
others are just doing nothing. The effective means of vacant
time expenditure is to use it appropriately and wisely.
Instead of doing nothing, students should do something
worth some to help them ease cramming and stress. Having
the effective means will lead to mitigation of time wastage.
Theoretical and Conceptual
Framework
Maslow’s theory is dedicated in
helping people understand
their needs, differentiate them
and set appropriated time
limits in order to get each
activity realized without
ignoring essential aspects of
one’s life (Tsang, 2014).
Einstein’s theory of time relativity
introduced the idea that time and
speed are directly correlated. Known
as "time dilation," the principle states
that time slows for things in motion
— the faster something goes, the
slower time passes.

Significance of the Study
The study aids in the management of time in stress of the
students in school. Avert cramming in submitting paper
works and other school projects. This will lead them to
accomplish more, make better decisions, and work more
efficiently. Students should engage themselves in
discerning and disciplining actions for themselves. This
also leads parents to be more aware of the behavior of
their children at school.
ASSUMPTIONS
Having vacant period when students are not working and can
choose what they do can help graduating students to ease
cramming in passing the requirements, projects and other school
works. It also allows the students do projects at school instead of
doing it at home. Vacant time helps a lot especially those
students who have responsibilities at home. Possibly, this can
only happen when students are not driven by arousing
improvement of technology. Being organized in things results in
less rework and mistakes. Planning and preparing for your day
leads to avoidance of creating your own problems. It is better
use of time which leads to more free time, waste less time in idle
activities. We should always remember that the early bird always
has more options. As well as, luck favors the prepared.
Scope and Limitation or Delimitation
This study only limits to the habitude of senior high school students of
Saint Vincent Academy of Maragusan, Inc. while having their vacant
period during August 2017 to February 2018. In this, we are observing
the way they behave throughout their vacant time only. The way they
behave during classes, flag ceremony, formal programs and
symposiums are beyond of our concern. The subjects of this study are
the Grade XII students of SVAM, Inc.

Perhaps the perception of the absent students during the interview

are not included. There are 2 male absents and 4 female in the section
of Our Lady of Lourdes. For the section of Our Lady of Fatima, there is
only one female and male absent.

CHAPTER TWO: REVIEW OF
RELATED LITERATURE
Using data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS,2010),
each week contains 168 hours that may lead be divided into
three types of activities: work, maintenance, and leisure. For
students, the work category may be defined as school related
activities including class time, study and assignment time, and
part-time employment. The report finds 24-year olds spend an
average of 3.6 hours per day during school months going to
class and doing homework, compared with just 2.8 hours per
day for 18-year old students. While older students spend more
time than their younger counterparts in class and doing
homework, the overall average for 18-24-year-olds is 3.3 hours.
According to ATUS results, full-time college students ages
18 to 24 spend the majority of their hours sleeping (9 hours
per day), followed by 3.9 hours for education and 3.9 hours
for leisure activities/sports. On average, 18-to-24-year-
olds spend just one hour per day “eating and drinking,” and
0.8 hours per day “grooming,” including washing and
dressing. Results also varied by gender and race/ethnicity.
While men spend an average of 80 minutes more per day on
leisure activities/sports than women do, women spend an
average of 3.4 hours on education compared to 3.1 hours
for men.

Data Analysis
Graduating Senior High School of Saint Vincent Academy of
Maragusan, Inc. considered vacant period as valuable to them. Only
few doubted its importance. The small number of respondents thought
out that vacant is not important.
.
In connection to the importance of vacant time expenditure, we asked
them about the essentiality of the vacant period yet only few
considered their vacant time expenditure as essential always. The
small amount of the population considered their vacant period
expenditure essential as almost always. A large amount of the
population considered their vacant time expenditure as essential
sometimes. It only characterizes that vacant time is important to the
students but they do not spend it essentially.
The most numbered answers of the population said that they open
their social media accounts especially Facebook. Second most
numbered answers stated that they are studying. Some said that they
sleep. Others stated that they are doing projects. An added number of
the population stated that they are listening to music.
Most of the students answered the vacant time should be spent on
studying. Additionally, the various students stated that it should be

hassle and cram for deadlines. Other respondents illustrated that it
can reason that they cannot have time for rest and boring
Additionally, they declared that it can lower their grades.

students. Most of them considered it as an important aspect
and can help them in many school papers and the like.
The students valued their vacancies yet they still spend it on
other unessential activities. Some spend it in playing,
browsing their social media accounts, watching movie,

their time if vacant time will be used effectively. Other students
provide a positive outlook and see it as an opportunity to do things
that are no done at home. Moreover, they said it can help them
discipline themselves.
Recommendations
There is a lot to be gained from further in-depth study
graduating students and their free time and leisure needs
on a day-to-day basis in their school environment. There is
also clearly a need for further study of specific issues
including the different age, gender and grade level of other
students. It would also be helpful to capture qualitatively the
experiences and perspectives other grade level which also
have their respective vacant time. Although
methodologically challenging, it would be very useful to
conduct some longer-term studies which sought to
enumerate the impact of vacant period on the habitude of a
graduating student.
