ABSTRACT
• Optical fiber is used in telecommunication system for its small
size, low loss and low interference which can transmit data by
electromagnetic carrier wave.

• The major limitation of fiber optic communication is signal

distortion by dispersion, which is compensated using many
methods in which FBG is the most effective one.

• The simulation at done at 10 giga bits per second

(Gb/s),1550mm wavelength of transmission system.

OBJECTIVE
• System is analysed using three techniques respectively pre-
,post- and symmetrical compensation in order to observe the
effective way of compensating dispersion.

• The specified results can be obtained by selecting the

appropriate dispersion constant, dispersion slope, effective
area and fiber length in the FBG filter section.

REQUIREMENT
• OPTISYSTEM version 16 is required to
design the optical communication system. This
software is installed on PC and then the system
is designed using three compensation
techniques.

INTRODUCTION
• Fiber optical communication involves the fastest and accurate
transmission of data streams in the form of light.

• The role of a communication channel is to transmit the optical

signal from transmitter to receiver without distorting; Optical
fiber is a dielectric waveguide in which information is
transmitted through a glass or plastic fiber in the form of light.

• Working principle of optical fiber is total internal reflection in

which the concept of acceptance angle and numerical aperture
are observed.

DISPERSION AND ITS EFFECTS
• Dispersion is defined as pulse spreading in an optical fiber.
• Over flow – inter symbol interference(ISI)
• Two kinds of dispersion is seen in single mode fiber i.e., chromatic and
polarization mode dispersion.
• Effects- 1.blurred bit stream
2.spreading effects of data results in spatial dispersion
3.single bit distortion increases BER of the full system
4.kerr non linearities leads to the soliton formation
5.due to (ISI) data rate cannot be increased

• In order to eliminate the above effects of dispersion the optical system has
to be compensated.
• Compensation is done using fiber bragg grating along with EDFA which
behaves like dispersion compensating filter.

COMPENSATION TECHNIQUES
• Dispersion compensation using FBG undergoes 3 processes namely
1) Pre Compensation Technique
2) Post Compensation Technique
3) Symmetrical Compensation Technique

• Pre-compensation technique: DCF with negative dispersion is placed

before the SMF with positive dispersion.

• Post-compensation technique: DCF with negative dispersion is placed

after the SMF with positive dispersion.

• Symmetrical compensation technique: DCF with negative dispersion is

placed before the SMF with positive dispersion and also DCF with negative
dispersion is placed after SMF with positive dispersion.

CONCLUSION
• The Symmetrical compensation has the best performance
when compared with post- and pre-compensation.

• In order to achieve optimized low dispersion and high

amplification, Optical fiber communication system is
compensated with 20% dispersion.

• The optimised results are obtained for the symmetrical

compensation with highest Q-factor and minimum BER
along with high power gain.
