Definition!
In simple terms, alternative assessment is interpreted
as the use of non-traditional approaches to assess
student performance or learning outcomes.
3
Alternative assessment is identified with
1
Authentic Assessment and Performance
Assessment. Alternative assessments are
deliberately designed to guarantee the
authenticity and honesty of the
assessment and the results are trusted. It
is called a performance assessment,
because students are asked to show their
mastery of a particular field of science,
explain in their own words and ways about
certain events.

“
Garcia and Pearson include the following
in their review of these labels:
performance assessment, authentic
assessment, portfolio assessment,
informal assessment, situated (or
contextualized) assessment, and
assessment by exhibition.
6
The main goal of alternative assessment
is to “gather evidence about how students
are approaching, processing, and
completing ‘real-life’ tasks in a particular
domain” (Garcia & Pearson, 1994, p. 357)

Alternative Assessment
Procedure
8
The same day-to-day activities that a students is
engaged in (e.g., writing, role-playing, group
discussion) are the basis for alternative
assessment.
9
Alternative assessment includes a
variety of instruments that can be
adapted to varying situations.
12
“
Any high-quality assessment must
adhere to validity, reliability, and
objectivity.
An instrument is said to be valid if
the instrumen used can measure
what should be measured (Sukardi,
2008). Valid in Indonesia is “Sahih”.
13
Alternative assessment
represents the best of all worlds
in that it looks at actual
performance on real-life tasks,
such as writing, self-editing,
reading, participation in
collaborative work, and doing a
demonstration in front of the
group . The procedures in and of
themselves are, therefore, valid.
14
According to Sugiono
(2005), Reliability is a
series of measuring
instruments that have
consistency if the
measurements made
with the measuring
instrument are carried
out repeatedly.
Objectivity - An instruments of
assessment must really measure what
is measured, without any interpretation
that has nothing to do with the
instruments.
The teachers must assess students
with the same criteria for each job
without discrimination.
When applied to
alternative
assessment,
triangulation refers DATA
to the collection of
data or information FAMILY TEACHER
from three different
sources or
perspectives.
