Unit 2 lec 3 Molar Mass

and the Mole

Quick review:
Convert 450 meters to miles
(given 1km=1000m, 1.61 km = 1 mile)
Introduction to the mole
• You will measure a mole of several elements.
• Find the mass of each element using the
scale. Find the mass in the container and
then subtract the mass of the container.
• Using your periodic table record the symbol,
atomic number, and mass for each sample.
• Do you notice any patterns about the masses
of the mole sample?
• How do you think that Dr. Meisner counted
out a mole of atoms of each element.

Atomic Mass (AMU)
• The mass of a single atom
• We cannot measure something this small
• We use Molar Mass instead.
• Example: The atomic mass of lead is 207.2
amu.
• If we weigh out 207.2 grams of lead we
have the molar mass of lead.
The Mole
• The ‘mole’ is a unit of measurement used
to count the number of particles found
within a substance.
• This is similar to using
– Dozen (12)
– Pair (2)
– Ream (500)
– Pair (2)
– Gross (144)

The Mole
• A mole equals
602000000000000000000000
(6.02x1023)
• It was found based on carbon-
12
– 12.01 grams of carbon has 6.02 x
1023 atoms of carbon
– Known as “Avogadro’s
Number”
– Named after Amadeo Avogadro
atoms  moles
use avogadro’s # (6.02 x 1023)
If atoms is given and you want to get moles:

___atoms x ___1 mole____ = ___ mole

6.02x10 23 atoms

If moles is given and you want to get atoms

___mol x 6.02x10 23 atoms = __atoms

1 mole
Ex 1: How many moles of Mg are in 1.25 x 1023 atoms?
Atoms --> moles

1.25 x 1023 atoms x _1 mole = 0.208 mol

6.02x10 23 atoms

Ex 2: How many atoms of C are in 2.0 moles?

Moles --> atoms

2 mol x 6.02x10 23 atoms= 1.2 x 1024 atoms

1 mol
Molar Mass
• The mass in grams of 1 mol of the
substance.
• To find the molar mass just look on
the periodic table at atomic mass.
Mass (g)  moles (mol)
If grams is given and you want to get moles:

___grams x ____1 mol____ = ___ mol

molar mass (g)

If moles is given and you want to get grams

___mol x __ molar mass (g) = ___ grams

1 mol
Ex. 1: How many moles are in 92.2
grams of Fe?
g--> mole
molar mass= 55.85g

92.2 g Fe2O3 x 1 mol Fe_ = 1.65 mol Fe

55.85 g Fe
Ex. 2: What is the mass of 9.45 mol of Al?

Mol --> gram

9.45 mol Al x 26.98g Al = 255 g Al

1 mol Al
