Introduction –
A Healthy Society is a nations resource. Hence , each one of us
should take care of our health.

How does one get a disease ?

There are microorganism around us. Some of them are useful

but some can cause diseases. They can do us harm. They enter
our body through food, water or air. If our resistance to disease
is weak we develop the symptoms of the disease. In other words
we fall ill.
Types of diseases…..
According to their mode of spreading,
diseases can be classified into three types.

Types
Epidemic

Diseases Communicable

Contagious
Epidemic Diseases :-
Definition-
1. Epidemic diseases may afflict large numbers of persons living in a
particular geographical area.

2. Symptoms of an epidemic disease also spread rather

rapidly among many, but not all, persons in the same community.
Epidemic diseases are frightening because of the number afflicted
and because of the rapid spread of the disease.
Some diseases, such as dengue fever and
measles, disable victims for some days, but
usually do not cause death. Others, such as
cholera and yellow fever, cause a varying
number of deaths. When particular groups
have not been exposed to a disease vector,
the outcome may be devastating, as
appears to have been the case among the
Plains Indians of Texas when they were
exposed to the communicable diseases
carried by the white settlers
Cholera is an infection of the small
intestine that is caused by the
bacterium Vibrio cholerae
The main symptoms are profuse
watery diarrhea and vomiting.
Transmission is primarily through
consuming contaminated drinking
water or food. The severity of the
diarrhea and vomiting can lead to
rapid dehydration and electrolyte
imbalance. Primary treatment is with
oral rehydration solution and if these
are not tolerated, intravenous fluids.
Antibiotics are beneficial in those with
severe disease. Worldwide it affects 3-
5 million people and causes 100,000-
130,000 deaths a year as of 2010.
Cholera was one of the earliest
infections to be studied by
Chickenpox is a common illness among
kids, particularly those under age 12. An
itchy rash of spots that look like blisters
can appear all over the body and be
accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
Symptoms usually go away without
treatment, but because the infection is
very contagious, an infected child should
stay home and rest until the symptoms
are gone.
Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus
(VZV). Kids can be protected from VZV by getting the
chickenpox (varicella) vaccine, usually between the
ages of 12 to 15 months. The Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends a
booster shot at 4 to 6 years old for further protection.
The CDC also recommends that people 13 years of
age and older who have never had chickenpox or
received the chickenpox vaccine get two doses of the
vaccine at least 28 days apart.
