MATERIAL BALANCE

MATERIAL BALANCE
Material balances are important first step
when designing a new process or analyzing an
existing one.
Material balances are nothing more than
the application of the law of conservation
of mass, which states that mass can
neither be created nor destroyed.
Input + generation −
output − consumption
= accumulation
• The production of BTX is 15000 Metric Tonne per
Annum.

• The conversions of BTX from distillation column

are same as 97 %. While, the feed input for the
distillation column varies and differentiate in the
diagram below.

• Catalytic reformer had been identified with

conversion based on the journal of title “Catalytic
Naphtha Reforming: Revisiting its Importance in
the Modern Refinery”, written by Uday T. Turaga
and Ramarayanan Ramanathan.
• The production of BTX for yearly is 15000 MTA

Trans-alkylation

• The overall mass balance for the above
diagram is:
• Input = Output
• F = 1712.33 kg/hr
TOLUENE DISTILLATION COLUMN
• Toluene in stream 6 is 1712.33 kg/ hr, thus
stream 6 is equal to:

• Overall mass balance:

• Stream 5 = Stream 6 + Stream 7
• a=b+c

• Overall mass balance:
• Stream 7 = Stream 9 + Stream 10
• d=e+f
