INTRODUCTION
A wide range of location sensing technologies
already exist, and more are under development.
All location technologies generate sensor
events in response to changes in the locations
of locatable objects.
The rate at which they are generated is high,
especially for high precision location
technologies.

 The research into location information
management presented in this case is part
of the QoSDREAM project.

 QoSDREAM aims to provide a middleware

platform for developing distributed
multimedia applications.

The major constituents of the QoSDREAM architecture consists of four
major parts :

 At the lowest level there is the Location Service It is in charge of gathering

location information from specific location-technologies and presenting it to
the rest of the system in a location-technology independent fashion.
 This information is made available to the rest of the system and applications
through an Event Messaging System.

 The Distributed Multimedia Service allows applications to construct
and manage, distributed multimedia components.
 The Distributed Object Database Management Service provides a
means of sharing system wide properties such as information about known
physical objects. However data stored is largely static.

Location Information
Location Service provides location-dependent information. The Location Service
is a collection of objects that retrieve location information from existing location
sensors and make this information available to QoSDREAM applications.

Modelling Location Information

This model contains the following abstractions:
 Locators : which represent objects whose location can be determined by a
given location-technology. Active badges and Bats are examples of Locators.
 Locatable : these represent objects whose locations need to be tracked.
Examples include people and equipment.
 Locatable Regions : These regions define various location specific
characteristics of Locatable.
The main reason for using regions as a way of presenting location information is
the varying degree of precision of location technologies.

Functioning of the elements
 Federator: Detect and interpret data generated
by location sensing technology
 Federator Events: Light-weight events
(generated information) sent to Spatial Relations
Manager(SRM)
 Location Modules: Translate Federator events
into regions and pass it to SRM
 Spatial Relations Manager: Analyze the updated
regions for changes in overlaps between them. If
found then produces Raw Overlap Events

Functioning of the elements (Contd.)
 Raw Overlap Events: Contain the type of
overlap between two regions as well as their
previous relationship
 Event Adaptors: Filter Raw Overlap events,
that are of interest to applications
 Overlap Events: Filtered events generated
by Event Adaptors and transmitted by Event
Messaging Service to applications

Types of Event Adapters
 Person Movement Adaptor: Generates overlap events
when a person’s location region overlaps with a
geographical location
 Person Overlap Adapter: Generates overlap events
when a person’s location region overlaps with that of
another.
 Equipment Overlap Adapter: Generates overlap events
when a person’s location region overlaps with that of an
equipment

 E.g. application interested in the arrival of a person at work

Event Messaging Service
 Allows clients to request the delivery of
events without having to know anything
about the sources of these events
 Allows applications to specify filters on the
events that are sent to it.

Active Lab application
 To use as a communications aid
 Uses location information provided by the
Active Badge System deployed in the lab
 Traffic was measured over a five minute
interval and at the time there were six
members of the lab wearing badges
 Application registers interest only in Person
Movement events

Location related traffic
 Badge Events (Federator Events)- 671
 Raw Overlap Events- 204
 Person Movement Events- 12
 Person Overlap Events- 40
 Equipment Overlap Events- 48

Conclusion
 QoSDREAM is a software framework that
supports the construction of context-aware
multimedia applications
 Location events are integrated through the
generation of overlap events
 Great reduction in location-related traffic for
the applications
