You are a researcher and thus
work in a laboratory. The
laboratory facility is a very
complex system. How the
laboratory facility functions and
communicates is not always
common knowledge to those
that work in a lab. One
particular communication
object of the laboratory system
to researchers is a stack light.
As a researcher it is important
to know what the facility

to act accordingly. Do you

Audio information
Stack lights are visual and audio
indication in the current state
of the air handling system of
the laboratory. If the stack
lights are in alarm or are any
color but green, the air
handling system is not
functioning as it should.
Located on the wall below all
stack lights should be a sign,
indicating what action should
be taken based on the color
combination of stack light

Audio information
Stack lights are always installed
as a set of two, or a pair. One
of the two stack lights is always
located outside of entrance to
the laboratory, the other stack
light is located in the main
room of the laboratory.
Because the stack lights are a
pair, the stack light color
displayed on one of these lights
will match the color on the
other light, regardless of its
location in our out of the
laboratory.

Interactions: Stack lights will change color from green to red simultaneously, matching the narration of

Audio information
Stack lights are a non-verbal
form of communication from
the laboratory to individuals of
the current state of the air
handing system. Stack lights
should always display a green
color and only change color
when the air handling system is
in a state that is abnormal.
Abnormal states of the air
handling system may endanger
the health and safety of
individuals in the laboratory,
but this is not always the case.
You heard that correctly, stack

Audio information
Since stack lights communicate
by color, knowing what the
different display colors mean
will aid you in deciding what to
do when you see certain colors
displayed.
If the light displayed on the
stack light is green, this means
that the air handing system is
normal and working as it
should.
If the light displayed is red, this
means that the air handing
system has failed and is not
working.

Audio information
Now that you know what the
different colors displayed on
stack lights mean, the last
component that would be
helpful is what you should do
when you see these different
colors are displayed.
If you are on the exterior of the
laboratory and see a green light
displayed, you are free to enter
the laboratory space.
If an orange light is displayed
outside of the laboratory you
should wait for the light to turn
green before entering, this can
take up to 20 minutes.
If the stack light displays the
red light, do not enter the
laboratory and ensure that all
individuals are out of the
laboratory by phoning into the
lab.

of the current state of the air
handling system. A green stack
light indicates that the
laboratory air handing system
is normal and it is safe to enter
and work in the laboratory.
Orange and red stack lights
indicate an abnormal state of
the laboratory air handling
system. If a red light is
displayed, no work should be
conducted in the laboratory as
it may be dangerous to do so.
