ADMISSION INTERVIEW
• The medical school admissions
interview is an important piece of
the holistic admissions process
• It provides information about
applicants’ fit with schools’
unique educational missions and
goals and their readiness for
medical school, among other
things
ADMISSION INTERVIEW
Interviews are rated as the
most important factor in
deciding which applicants to
accept into medical school.

http://www.med-ed-online.
Dunleavy, D., Whitaker, K. The evolving medical school admissions. Analysis in Brief. AAMC. Vol. 11 Nov 7. Sept 2011
• 87 percent response was obtained
• 99 % of the responding medical schools use interviews in
evaluating students for medical school students admission
• Interview ranks second to grade point average in
importance among the four selection
Puryear, J., Lewis, Lloyd. Description of the interview process in selecting students for admission to US medical schools.
Journal of Medical Education. Vol 56., Nov. 1981
Interview format
• 87% - 1:1
• 8% -2: 1
• 2% - 3:1
• 1% - 4:1, 8:1, 12:1 3:3
• 100% faculty and staff
• 72% students as interviewee
• 34% alumni as interviewee
• 80% at least 1 member of the
admission committee
Puryear, J., Lewis, Lloyd. Description of the interview process in selecting students for admission to US medical schools.
Journal of Medical Education. Vol 56., Nov. 1981
Types of interview used in selection interview
• Unstructured
• Semistructured
• Structured

Edwards, JC, Johnson EK, Molidoe JB. The Interview in the admission process. Acad. Med 1990 Mar, 65 (3): 167-77
Process used in selection interview
• Structuring involves analyzing what makes a medical student successful
• standardizing the questions for all applicants
• providing sample answers for evaluating responses
• and using panel interviews (several interviewers simultaneously with
one applicant).

Dunleavy, D., Whitaker, K. The evolving medical school admissions.Analysis in Brief. AAMC. Vol. 11 Nov 7. Sept 2011
Correlation of the interview scores and
performance in clinical tasks
• there was no significant relation between interview scores
and performance in clinical tasks (Kulatunga Moruzi and
Norman, 2002)
• Except for Multiple Mini Interview (MMI)
• A format similar to OSCE
• Showed significant relationship with success on OSCE
performance during the clinical years

Ma, Collen., Harris, P., Cole, Andrew. Selection into medicine using interviews and other measures. Issues in
educational research. 26(4), 2016
What is a Multiple Mini
Interview or MMI?
• Developed by McMaster University
• an interview format that gauges an applicant’s
potential to successfully interact with patients and colleagues.
• The MMI is designed to measure communication skills,
specifically verbal and nonverbal skills that cannot be
measured using standardized written exams or by reviewing
coursework transcripts.
• The MMI typically consists of six to 10 very short interviews
that revolve around a specific scenario.
Findings:
• the multiple independent assessments of applicants by different
inter-viewers across different stations increase the reliability and
objectivity of the assessment of MMI.
• This suggests that the MMI may have the added advantage of more
objectively identifying applicants who may not be suitable to train as
doctors because of particular concerns
• Differences in PPI and MMI may be significant, if PPI is highly
structured.

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TESTS
1. Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional intelligence Test
• ability-based test created to measure the four branches of the
emotional intelligence model that was developed by Mayer et al
• consists of 141 items and takes 30–45 minutes to complete
• providing 15 main scores : total emotional intelligence score, two
area scores four branch scores, and eight task scores

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TESTS
2. Situational Test of Emotional Understanding (STEU)
• STEU is a test developed by MacCann and Roberts that
examines emotional understanding
• test-taker is required to choose which emotions is most
likely to result from an emotional situation in each item.

Cook, CJ, Hilton, T. Does emotional intelligence influence success during medical school admissions and program

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE TESTS
3. Situational Test of Emotion Management (STEM)
• test also developed by Mac Cann and Roberts
• assesses emotion management
• the capacity of individuals to regulate their emotions by reducing
negative feelings and enhancing positive ones.
• Subjects are given a situation then must choose from four strategies
to apply to improve emotions and manage the problem

Cook, CJ, Hilton, T. Does emotional intelligence influence success during medical school admissions and program

Systemic review: Emotional intelligence influence
success during medical school admission
• 1,332 articles PubMed, CINAHL, and ERIC
• 26 articles, six manuscripts
• Three of these four
a weak positive relationship between emotional
intelligence scores and success during matriculation
• Two of the four
no significant relevant correlations between emotional
intelligence and medical school admission selection

Matriculation. Journal of Educational evaluation for health professions. J. Educ Eval health prof 2016: 13:40
Other measures of personal competencies
• letters of reference/evaluation
-70% of the 142 medical schools reported using letters of
evaluation in their admissions processes and, on average, rated them
as “important” sources of information for deciding whom to interview
and admit
-structured format employing more detailed letter writing
instructions and/or the use of ratings and narrative descriptions to
address a set of core competencies.

• autobiographical essays
Other measures of personal competencies
• autobiographical essays
- responses to open-ended questions
-limited evidence about the quality and usefulness of the
information collected
Research conducted at McMaster University suggests that scores on
the essays have little correlation with outcome measures
Structured tasks or Job simulation
• Simulation has a well-known history in the military, nuclear power,
and aviation industries.
• Simulation in the area of medicine and nursing has become an
important part of the education of students and practicing healthcare
providers
• Simulation has become more integrated into the education of nurses
and physicians in the past 20 years, but is not fully integrated into the
development of skills for practicing nurses

Journal of Issues in Nursing Vol. 18, No. 2, Manuscript 6.
