 IPS Pressure Control Equipment

Overview.
 EUB Directive 033.
 IPS Recommendation
 Site Visit / Equipment Rig-up
Well Control Safety

 To provide a Safe means at the

surface to confine the fluid
contained in the wellbore and
provide an absolute seal so well
pressure cannot escape and blow
free.
THEORY

FORMATION PRESSURE

 Original pressure in a hydrocarbon

reservoir is associated with water
pressure in:
 The reservoir itself
 Formation above the reservoir
 Formations around the reservoir
 Normal hydrostatic pressure gradient
estimated as: .45psi/foot

Flowtube counteract the force acting on the
cable.

Grease injection must counteract

the well fluid forces from getting
Grease around the cable.

Eline Manual BOP
ELINE BLOWOUT PREVENTER (BOP)

Purpose

The BOP is used to contain

pressure in a well with
Eline tools in the hole
when the cable is stopped
without damage to the
cable.
ELINE BOP

The need to close a Eline BOP may be:

 To pump in to kill a well kick in the open
hole or casing
 To temporarily retain well pressure while
bleeding off the lubricator to replace
packoff elements
 To remove, add or make repairs to the riser
or cable
 Emergency shut-in in case of failure of
system above the BOP
ELINE BOP

Principle
The sealing elements are two
elastomeric faced metal rams which
have been contoured to fit a
particular size of cable. The
opposed rams are closed manually
or hydraulically (with mechanical
backup) to shut in the well. When
the BOP is activated, the rubber
faces will seal around the outer
surface of the cable by extruding
into the interstitial spaces between
the armor strands.

Outer Seal

Inner Seal

 TWO MATCHING RAMS ARE USED AS A

PAIR.
 INNER SEALS ARE SLOTTED TO MATCH
CABLE / Line SIZE.
Eline Manual BOP

ELINE VALVES
Operation

 ONCE RAMS ARE CLOSED, A CONTINUOS

SEAL IS CREATED.
 WIRELINE VALVES ARE DESIGNED TO
HOLD PRESSURE FROM ONE DIRECTION
ONLY. OUTER SEAL (SADDLE) MUST BE ON
TOP.
RECOMMENDED PRACTICES

Integrated Production Services recommends using

Wireline BOP’s when involved with:

 Sour Wells
 Under Balanced Perforating
 Well Stimulation
 Through Tubing Perforating
 Pipe Recovery
 Wireline Conveyed Fishing Operations
LUBRICATORS AND UNIONS

Purpose
The Lubricator Riser is a series of
tubular sections with Quick Union
connections. A sufficient length of
lubricator is used to contain the
entire tool string to be run into the
well.
LUBRICATORS AND UNIONS–TYPES

Tubing Lubricators
Tubing pup joints with Quick Union
connections are screwed on to each
end. These are rated for working
pressures of 3000psi / 5000psi /
10,000 psi, they have various I.D.’s
and are used for standard and H²S
service.
GREASE INJECTION CONTROL HEAD

Purpose
Designed to create a seal around
a moving wireline, allowing
intervention access to wells
under pressure.
GREASE HEAD FLOW PATH
GREASE INJECTION CONTROL HEAD

Principles
Positioned at the upper-most point of
the pressure equipment string, the
grease injector control head
comprises two major sub-
assemblies, the stuffing box or
pack-off and the flow tube
assembly.
GREASE INJECTION CONTROL HEAD

Stuffing Box/Pack-Off Head

The stuffing box is designed to pack-off on a

stationary wireline by means of a pack-off rubber
energized by hydraulic pressure.
GREASE INJECTION CONTROL HEAD

Flow Tube / Grease Tube

Assembly

The flow tube assembly is made

up of inner flow tube sized to fit
tightly around the wireline and
an outer sleeve to support the
assembly.
