IMPORTANCE OF SELF

HEALING CONCRETE
WHY THE NEED?
 Concrete can withstand compressive forces very well
but not tensile forces. When it is subjected to tension
it starts to crack, which is why it is reinforced with
steel; to withstand the tensile forces
DEFINITION

 Concrete which
heals itself when it
comes in contact
with air and
water,it produces
lime on outer layer
of concrete.
HOW TO CURE??

 Spore forming bacteria are used as the thick wall of

spore can withstand huge stress.
 They are classified as
* Bacillus pasturii
* Bacillus subtiles
* Bacillus sphaericus
* Bacillus cohnii
BACTERIA
WHAT SPECIAL IN BIO CONCRETE

 The special bacteria that has to resist the alkalinity

and the mechanical stress of concrete.
 The chemical precursor to activate the bacteria
WORKING PROCESS

 Self healing concrete is a product that will biologically

produce limestone to heal cracks that appear on the
surface of concrete structures.
Ca(C3H5O2)2+ 7O2 CaCO3 + 5CO2 + 5H2O

BEFORE AND AFTER
TESTS ON SELF HEALING CONCRETE

 In 2011 , Jonkers and his team is doing

testing and case study on self healing
concrete.
 Structures will be fitted with some
panels of self healing concrete and
others with conventional concrete so
that the behaviour of the two can be
compared.
GRAPH
RESULTS
HOW THE HEALING AGENTS ARE
APPLIED
* BY DIRECT APPLICATION
The bacteria and the chemical precursor are added directly
while making the concrete.

* ENCAPSULATION LWA
a) The part of the coarse aggregate is replaced by the light
weight aggregate, which is impregnaed with twice the calcium
lactate solution and the spores of bacteria
b) After impregnation the clay particles with 6% healing agents
and the concrete is made.
ADVANTAGES

• Improvement in compressive strength of concrete.

• Reduction in permeability of concrete.

• Reduction in corrosion of reinforcement.

DISADVANTAGES
 Cost of bacterial concrete is double than conventional
concrete.

 Growth of bacteria is not good in every atmosphere.

 No IS code or any other code is available for design of mix

concrete with bacteria.
APPLICATION OF BACTERIAL
CONCRETE

 For constructing underground retainers for

hazardous waste
 For high rise buildings
 Water retaining structures
 Concrete floors, Tunnel linings, Basement walls
