Piaget's theory of cognitive development is

of interest in connection with the nature-

nurture debate. ... Piaget assumed
that nature played a significant point in
understanding why all children pass
through the same stages of cognitive
development in the same sequence
Cognitive development is Jean Piaget's theory , proposed in
1920 , he was a Swiss developmental psychologist .Through a
series of stages, Piaget proposed four stages of cognitive
development: the sensorymotor, preoperational, concrete
operational and formal operational period.

Piaget observed and described children at different ages. His

theory is very broad, from birth through adolescence, and
includes concepts of language, scientific reasoning, moral
development, and memory.
STAGE 1
SENSORY MOTOR AGE
FROM BIRTH TO YEAR 2
During this stage Piaget’ little scientists begin to develop :
• Reflexes
• Hand – eye coordination
• Object permanence
STAGE 2
PREOPERATIONAL STAGE
FROM YEAR 2 TO YEAR 7

During this stage the child begins to develop :

Egocentrism
Imitation
Ability to represent object with images and words
Language skills
Imagination [animism]
Intuitive reasoning [centration and lack of reversibility]
STAGE 3
CONCRETE OPERATIONAL STAGE
FROM YEAR 7 TO YEAR 12

During this stage the child begins to develop :

fundamentals of logic
ability to sort and classify objects
understanding of conservation
STAGE 4
FORMAL OPERATIONAL STAGE
FROM YEAR 11 TO YEAR 15
During this stage the child begins to develop :
sophisticated and advance thinking [inferential thinking and drawing conclusions]
formal operations [mental calculations and abstract /intangible concepts]
rational and logical reasoning
