My Internship Experience

Getting Started Personal Statement
Major concern that I have about the
internship is weather I can easily fulfill my hours
since there is a 120 hour minimum requirement
to fulfill this aspect of my practicum.
There are three main areas that I am
interested in learning more about: recruitment
and outreach, development and fundraising,
and program creation and implementation.
My areas of strength are organization,
document creation, writing, and analyzing
difficult situations and formulating strategies
for accomplishing resolution.
The most important thing to me is that I am
able to learn as much as possible from the
experience, and be an asset to the Boys and
Girls Club.
I do not see any real challenges as far as the
placement goes, I believe that my greatest
challenge will come with recalling what I have
learned in class and being able to make
practical application in my internship.

Getting I have witnessed how the services offered by the
Acquainted local club has positively affected the local
community by meeting the needs of parents and
children serviced by the before and after school
program, as well as the teens that participate in
the evening programs offered by the club.
The club is located in a high poverty area, and
many of the kids that attend the programs benefit
for subsidies, or programs that help pay for the
cost of attendance (POC).
There are also programs that are held a couple of
evening during the week that has a more diverse
ethnic population that is run by outside
organizations.
I now understand more fully that the agency does
not exist in a vacuum, but that it is influenced, and
affected by many variables.
Developing Ethical Competence
Appropriate Boundaries
Establishing appropriate boundaries are a very
important part of fulfilling an internship, and
professionalism must be maintained at all time.
I make it a point to use the same language in
addressing staff just as they address me as Mr.
Carter, I address them with the proper label as
well.
What one person might call unethical another
might not, so it is good to be clear of ethical
expectations.
The right thing to do
Unit Director a few weeks ago, I asked him if he
would write me a letter of recommendation for
my e-portfolio.
Upon arriving at the club on Friday, I was made
aware that he had taken the day off.
My ethical dilemma was if I would call his cell
phone even though he had not given me the
number to inquire about the letter of
recommendation, or just work with what I had.
While riding home I decided not to use the cell
phone number because I had not acquired it
directly from the Unit Director, and that I would
just email him instead.

This style of decision making can be
used effectively in many areas of Developing a Plan
life, and I can see using more often
(Kiser, 2016).
 A large part of what I have added to the work
experience is by helping brainstorming ways and
coming up with processes to make the everyday
functionality of the Boys and Girls club smoother.
I also make it appoint to avail myself to assisting in
Using Supervision other areas, and this is how I have been called
upon to help out at two other club events during
my internship so far.
I often use email to send reports, or updates on
what I have worked on for them, but some of
them are not real good on returning email, so I
usually follow up once I arrive when possible.
I would like to sit down with the unit Director soon
to talk about his supervision style
I believe that when I enter the human services
filed I will appreciate clear direction from
supervision as to their expectation, and definitely
debriefings periodically, to gain feedback on my
performance.
Communicating in Your Internship

I do a lot of one-on-one communicating in my internship, though there are times

when I meet with, or plan with multiple directors. Phone
What I have learn during my internship thus far is that no matter how efficient you are
as a communicator, there is always room for improvement. Email
The area that I have the least experience with is dealing with community situations,
but that bridge will be crossed next Saturday, because we are hosting an open Face-to-Face
house, and community day at the club.

I like the strength based approach to communication, and have seen first-hand the
last two weeks how this approach has been utilized in moving forward with
improvement efforts at the club (new equipment, outreach, program
implementation), and how being encouraging, and affirming can create positive
outcomes (Kiser, 2016).

The site that I am assigned to has a child
and parent population that is
predominately African American.
The 19802 zip code is all inner city, so the
schools and youth that are serviced are
from that locale.
I have had to learn that beliefs, values,
and culture vary depending on where
people are from. It has caused me not
to take certain things for granted such as
peoples style of communication,
learning drives, and social functionality.
 Self-inflicted stress
I do not have any external stressors, even

Ending Your Internship

The Boys and Girls Club was a very welcoming situation, in which it was
made clear that I was respected as a professional, and not treated any
different then the staff members.
My time at the club was productive, and I have been invited to return
after my internship to serve as a mentor for the Jr. Youth of the Year
program.
My site supervisor wants to attend my graduation, and I feel that that is a
blessing.
I have decided to join the local chapter of Toastmasters at my current
place of business, I believe this will help build my confidence in public
speaking.
Planning Your Career
Short-term Goals
My short-term goals as my internship ends is to
continue at my present company for at least
a year, while volunteering at a couple of
nonprofits to gain more experience in the
human service field.
I enjoy working in higher education, so I might
possibly see how I can leverage my masters
degree in this area, maybe in academic
administration, or student services.
Long-term Goals/My own non-
profit
To work in human services in an administrative
capacity, possibly as an assistant director, and
work towards becoming a director.
One that deals with helping young people
transition from adolescents to adulthood, by
offering services such as GED preparation, life
skills courses, career guidance, and housing
assistance etc.
This program will take a holistic approach to
dealing with issues in the inner city and offer
people resources, and training so that they
can become empowered to improve their
quality of life.
