Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), is a private, non profit company was set up in
the late 1800s to test many products for the insurance industry. Fire safety and
prevention were a major concern.

The UL certification can be largely divided into two levels: Listing certification and
Recognition certification. UL Listing generally means a certification for a final
product. UL Recognition means a certification for a part or a component built into a
product.

UL Product Labeling UL listed or UL recognized
When labeling UL-approved products, a general distinction is made between
Recognized Components and Listed Components:
Recognized Components
This label is used on products that are not complete in terms of their
application.
The correct use of such components must make due allowance for the
Conditions of Acceptability, listing the framework conditions and
application parameters approved by the UL.

NEMA- - National Electrical Manufacturers Association
NEMA has approximately 450 member companies and, through them, NEMA
standards affect over $120 billion dollars worth of United States domestic
production.
NEMA also serves as the administrator for the U.S. TAGs (United States
Technical Advisory Group) to ISO/TC 145 (International Organization for
Standardization/Technical Committee) and to some of its subcommittees.

Standards play a vital part in the design, production, and distribution of products
destined for both national and international commerce.

What is a NEMA standard?
A NEMA standard defines a product, process, or procedure with reference to
one or more of the following: nomenclature, composition, construction,
dimensions, tolerances, safety, operating characteristics, performance, rating,
testing, and the service for which the product(s) are designed.
Standards - May contain information relevant for all audiences; consult the scope and document description.
Application guides - Guidelines are geared toward installers, inspectors, and employees working with the
given product.
Suggested standard for future design - For engineers and industrial designers, these standards
suggest a sound engineering approach to future development.
White papers - Intended for a broad audience, including the layperson, installers, inspectors, and
maintenance personnel. They contain practical tips on subjects like the hazards of working with electrical equipment
hot, and dealing with water-damaged electrical equipment.

Is the NEMA certification the same as the UL
certification?
Compliance with NEMA standards is voluntary.
Third party certification is not required, however, for the manufacturer to claim
compliance with NEMA std. There are several testing organizations in the US
that will perform this service: Underwriters Laboratories, Intertek Testing
Services, Factory Mutual, etc.

NFPA and NEC
The National Electrical Code (NFPA Volume 70) has been published, edited, and
revised since 1897 and has been sponsored by the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) since 1911.
The NEC is considered by some to be the finest building code standard of its
kind.
The NEC is used not only throughout most of the United States, but also in some
other countries throughout the world, such as Mexico and Puerto Rico.
The original Electrical Code was developed by the combined efforts of the
insurance, electrical, and architectural industries.
The first electrical code was assembled by the National Association of Fire
Engineers in 1897.

Understanding the NEC
In the US, the best known electrical is probably the National Electrical Code.
While the word "national" is included in the title, this code has no influence in
installation practices in a given area unless it is adopted in that area.
The area may be a state, a county, or a city. Many areas adopt the NEC directly,
and it then becomes the installation code for that local.

Understanding the impact of NEC in UL standards and
design
The 2005 Edition of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70 contains an
Article 409 on Industrial Control Panels.
Thisarticle will provide the installer and enforcement authorities with the
minimum requirements to facilitate the safe installation and inspection of industrial
control panels.
Until now, industrial control panels have been installed based upon general
electrical requirements from several different articles in the NEC.
With the increased use of these panels, there has been a significant increase in
their misapplication of control products and related equipment.
Article409 will impact the way your equipment is designed and constructed
so that the entire panel and all components inside meet a defined Short
Circuit Current Rating (SCCR) for the application and that the panel is
marked with the appropriate SCCR.
ABB Group
September 5, 2017 | Slide 43
Understanding the impact of NEC in UL standards and
design
The final builder/assembler of the equipment inside of the panel will be
responsible for providing the SCCR levels for the overall panel. There are three
options:
1. Test each panel construction and record the construction in their follow-up
procedure. With the multitude of possible product combinations within a panel,
this option can require a lot of testing and maintenance. Third party testing and
certification may also be required.
ABB Group
September 5, 2017 | Slide 44
Understanding the impact of NEC in UL standards and
design
The previous standards allowed the practice of listing a panel according to the
AIR rating of its main overcurrent protective device.
The new standards (UL) include the entire combined power circuit in
requirements for the SCCR.
TheNEC is asking industrial control panelbuilders to determine an overall
SCCR for the panel. One new procedure takes the approach of using the least
common denominator for SCCRs within a panel.
For example, if you have several items within the panel, such as circuit breakers,
a motor control and a starter, the lowest rated SCCR of the device within the
control panel MUST be the one that is marked on the panel. If you obtained the
SCCR from the manufacturer of the components, a simple example is:
Circuit Breaker: SCCR of 25 kA
Motor Control: SCCR of 15 kA
Starter: SCCR of 5 kA
The panels overall short circuit current rating is 5kA based on the lowest rated
component. Another procedure is to use a group of power circuit components that
have been tested in combination to the specified SCCR.

equipment as required:
a) Low-voltage power circuit breakers
b) Bare bus and connections
c) Instrument and control power transformers
d) Instruments, meters, and relays
e) Control wiring and accessory devices
The low-voltage power circuit breakers are contained in individual grounded
metal compartments and controlled either remotely or from the front of the
enclosure.
Thecircuit breakers may be stationary or removable (drawout) type; when of
removable type, mechanical interlocks are provided for proper operating
sequence.
