 INTRODUCTION
Docear is a project of the Information Science
Group at the University of Konstanz, Germany.
This project was initiated in 2010 under the name
SciPlore Mind Mapping by Joeran Beel and Bela
Gipp as part of their PhD projects. In 2011, Stefan
Langer and Marcel Genzmehr joined the core team
and the project received research grants to further
develop SciPlore MindMapping, since then being
called Docear. This non-commercial open-source
project, which has currently 36.000 registered
users, is supported by several volunteers from
around the world and by the DKE Group and the
University of California, Berkeley .
DEFINITION
Docear is what the developers call an academic
literature suite. Comparable to Microsoft Office ,
which bundles several applications for office workers,
Docear bundles several applications for academics . As
of now, these applications are BibTeX based reference
management , mind mapping , and some pdf
management capabilities. For the future, Docear is
supposed to integrate a word processor ,PDF editor
and academic search engine.

Comparison with Zotero and Mendeley
We would love to tell you that Docear is the best
reference management software, under any
circumstances. However, truth is that different students
and researchers have different needs, and neither
Docear, nor any other reference manager, can satisfy all
of them (even though some developers seem to believe
that their tool is the only truly perfect one ). To help you
to decide whether Docear is the best reference manager
for you, we did a comprehensive comparison of Docear
and the of the most popular reference managers, namly
Mendeley and Zotero. The following table provides a

CONCLUSION
Docear has two key features not always offered by
comparable tools. First, Docear lets you import PDF
annotations (bookmarks, comments and highlighted
text). This way, a document most important information
can be easily organized. If more information is required
than the bookmark or comment itself provides, Docear
can open the PDF on the page the bookmarks points to.
Second, all information is structured in a mind map.
Information management in a mind map is more
effective and efficient than using a simple list or social
tags.
