energy within our atmosphere and increase the warming of the earths surface and atmosphere.
Excerpt from CLIMATE CHANGE 2007 report of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as set up by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Program. 1. Solar energy passes through the atmosphere, is absorbed by the earths surface, and warms it up.
2. Greenhouse gases absorb some of the
reflected heat energy. 3. Human actions gradually increase concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and accelerate the global warming process.
-Agriculture sector is a huge sourc e of methane
and nitrous oxide and responsible for 15% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate-friendly agricultural management
( i.e.organic farming) could reduce emissions significantly. Traffic
27% of all man-made CO2 emmissions are
transportation related
750 million cars worldwide emit about 225
billion tons of CO2 each year
Industrialization Industrial production is responsible for 57%ll CO2 emissions
Largest quantities of CO2 emitted by energy
producers and energy-intensive industries
New filtration technologies could reduce
CO2 emissions by 30 to 50% Deforestation 20% of CO2 emissions worldwide result from deforestation
Net forest loss since 2000: 7.3 milliom
hectares per year.
Improvement measures: afforestation,
reforestation, avoid deforestation
4. The accelerated warming process has a number of
dangerous impact Melting of glaciers/ice caps
Since the early 1960s, mountain glaciers around the
world have experienced an estimated net loss ofover 4,000 cubic km. Of water; this loss was more than twice as that during the 1990s as in the previous years. Projections of 4oC rise in average global temperature would cause nearly all worlds glacier to melt resulting to rising sea levels
More Strong Storms
Globally, the annual number of strong storms doubled from
around 8 (early 1970s) to 18 (2000-2004)
Hurricane Katrina in 2005 was the fifth largest hurricane on
record and caused $60B in damage
The magnitude and damage caused by the 27 tropical
storms in the Atlantic during 2005 were the highest yet recorded
Desertification
2B people in 110 countries are affected and threatened
by accelerating desertification
The UN projects that 30% of the worlds land
surface will turn into desert in the future. The CAUSE
Global warming is very likely caused by
man the strongest conclusion to date. Concentrations of heat trapping greenhouse gases in the planets atmosphere have increased markedly as a result of human activities since 1750, mainly from the use of fuels like oil, gas and coal, and because of agriculture THE OUTLOOK
Hotter temperature and rises in sea level
would continue for centuries no matter how much humans control their pollution. It is very likely that heat waves, hot weather, and heavy rainfalls could become more frequent. Toward the end of the century, sea ice in Arctic may disappear almost entirely in summer. TEMPERATURE CHANGE
As temperatures rise, between 1.1 billion
and 3.2 billion will suffer from water scarcity and between 200 million and 600 million more persons will go hungry by year 2080. Predicted temperature rises of 2-11.5 degrees Fahrenheit by the year 2100. SEA LEVELS
The increase in sea levels can cause
oceans to overflow and may cause the disappearance of some countries which can cause mass migrations. Projected to rise by 7-23 inches at the end of the century. An additional 3.9 7.8 inches are possible if recent, surprising melting of polar ice sheets continues. HURRICANES An increase in hurricane and tropical cyclone strength since 1970 more likely than not can be attributed to man-made global warming. Scientists said global warmings connection varies with storms in different parts of the world, but that it influences the storms that strike America. Man-made factors have likely contributed to changes in wind patterns. It also is likely that typhoons and hurricanes will become more intense, with stronger winds and heaviest rains. EXTINCTION
Global warming may cause the extinction
of about 25 percent of mammals and 12 percent of birds. Numerous plant and animal species, alrady weakened by pollution and loss of habitat, are not expected to survive the next 100 years. Several factors that directly connect climate change and agricultural productivity
1. Average temperature increase
2. Change in rainfall amount and patterns 3. Rising atmospheric concentrations of CO2 4. Pollution levels such as tropospheric ozone 5. Change in climatic variability and extreme events What are to be done?
To reduce global warming by stabilizing
concentrations of greenhouse gases.
Channeling of grants and loan to poor
countries so that they can help solve the problem.
