Guide
Use this to check your
answers and see step by step
instructions.
1. Lucy places five cards that are labeled 1 to 6 face
down on the table and mixes them up. What is the
likelihood that her friend harry will draw an even
numbered card?
Cards are 1 2 3 4 5 6
Even numbers are 2 4 6
So, 3 out of 6 are even
3/6 = = 50%
As Likely As Not
2. The results of a survey show that baseball is the favorite sport for
18 out of 25 people. Which percent is closest to the probability that a
persons favorite sport will NOT be baseball?

Notice this is a NOT question.

(Looking for compliment)
18/25 like baseball, therefore, 25-18
= 7 people do not like baseball
So 7/25 = 0.28 = 28% do not like
baseball.
3. On the last math test in Deckers class, 21 out of 25 students
scored
an 80 or higher. What percent is the experimental probability that a
student selected at random will score an 80 or higher on the next
test?

Set up the fraction, divide to get

decimal, change to a percent.
21/25 = 0.84 = 84%

4. Joses sandwich shop offers a lunch special on sandwiches on whole grain, black, and rye breads. You can also choose between chicken cutlet,
and tuna salad. How many different sandwiches can you make for the lunch special?

Determine how many choices you

have of each.
3 different breads, and 2 different
fillings.
Multiply the number of each choice.
3(2) = 6
You have 6 different sandwiches
5. Two number cubes are rolled and the results are
added. What is the probability that the sum is equal to
2?

Determine how many ways you can

get the sum of 2.
1 + 1, you must roll a one on both
dice.
The probability of rolling a one is 1/6.
Multiply the probabilities of the two
dice.
1/6(1/6) = 1/36
6. Daniel made 6 out of 15 free throw shots. About
how many out of the next 10 free throw shots would
you expect him to make?

Determine the probability of Daniel

making a free throw shot.
6/15 = 0.4
Multiply this by 10 (the number of
shots he will take) .4(10) =
4
So, I would expect Daniel to make 4
shots.
8. Lewis rolls a number cube and then chooses a card from a set of
cards numbered 1 through 5. What is the probability that he will roll
an even number and choose an even numbered card?

Determine the probabilities of each

event.
P(rolling even) = 3/6 =
P(even card) = 2/5
Multiply the probabilities together to
get P(rolling even and drawing even)
(2/5) = 2/10 = 1/5 = 0.2 = 20%
9. Drake made 14 out of 20 free throw shots. About
how many out of the next 30 free throw shots would
you expect him to make?

Determine the probability of Drake

making a free throw shot.
14/20 = 0.7
Multiply this by 30 (the number of
shots he will take) .7(30) =
21
So, I would expect Drake to make 21
shots
10. During his first 20 picks from a bag
of marbles, Merle chose 8 yellow marbles, 9 green marbles, and 3 blue
marbles. What is the experimental probability that Mark will choose a
green marble on his next pick? Write the probability as a percent.

Determine how many green out of

how many total.
9 green out of 20 total marbles = 9/20
Change to percent 9/20 = 0.45 =
45%
. 11. Brian rolls a number cube and
spins a spinner with three equal sections. Create a tree diagram to find
how many outcomes are possible?

12. Yvonne spins a spinner that is split into 6 equal sectors. The
sectors are labeled 3, 1, 2, 3, 2, 3. What is
the probability that the spinner will land on the number 1?

Find how many 1s there are out of

how many total sections.
1 one out of 6 total sections,
so 1/6
13. There are four apartments in a building, numbered 1, 2, 3, and 4. Two
of the apartments randomly get a coupon in the mail. What is the probability
that apartments 1 and 3 get the coupons?

Find the probability of each

apartment getting a coupon. 1 out of
4
Multiply the probabilities to get the
P(1 and 3)
(1/4) = 1/16
