Assessment of

Cardiorespiratory
Endurance
Cardiorespiratory endurance = CR
fitness
Or aerobic capacity
Determined by maximal amount of
oxygen the human body is able to
utilize per minute of physical
activivity = VOmax
Expressed in L/minute or mL/kg/min
When comparing with two person
who have same value, the lesser
body lean have the higher relatif
value of VOmax
Component of VO
HR (Heart rate)
SV (stroke volume)
Art-ven difference ( the amount of
oxygen removed from vascular
system)
Heart Rate
Normal heart rate ranges from 40
bpm iduring resting time in train
atheles, to 200 bpm during maximaql
exercis
Maximal heart rate that person can
achieve starts to drop by about one
beat per year beginning at about 12
years of age
Stroke Volume
Range from 50 ml per beat (stroke)
during rest condition in untrain
individuals to 200 ml at maximum
endurance train athletes
Amount of Oxygen Removed from
Blood
Known as arterial- venous oxygen difference
The oxygen content in the arteries at sea level is
typically 20 mL of oxygen per 100 cubic
centimeters (CC) of blood
The oxygen content in the veins during a resting
state is about 15 ml per 100 cc.
Thus the difference is 5 mL per 100 cc
Because the additional oxygen removed during
maximal exercise, the venous oxygen content
drops to about 5 mL, yielding a-vOdiff of 15
mL/100cc
Three factors are used to compute
VO
HR
SV
a-vOdiff
VOin L/min = (HR x SV x a-vOdiff) 100.000

Example : the resting VO of individual with a

RHR of 76 bpm and stroke volume of 79 mL
would be : ( 76 x 79 x 5 ) 100.000 = 3.42
L/min = 48,9 mL/kg/min

Predicting Oxygen Uptake and Caloric
Expenditure from Walking and Jogging
Oxygen up take can be expressed in liters
per minyte (L/mt) or milliliters per kilogram
per minute (mL/kg/min)
The human burns about 5 calories for each
liter of oxygen consumed
A person with VOmax 3,5 l/min who train at
60% of maximun uses 2,1 (3,5 x 0.6) liters of
oxygen per minute.
Same with 2,1 x 5 = 10,5 calories / minute
During 30 minutes will burn 315 calories
Cont
- A pound of body fat represents 3500
calories
- Need time about 333 min ( 3500
10,5) to burn a pound of body fat
- If a day, once do exercise for 30
minutes, ti will need 11 day to
reduce body fat a pound (0,45kg)
Cont
Applying the principle of 5 calories burned per liter of
oxygent consumed, we can predict the caloric out put
for waling and jogging ( see table 6.9)
Example : caloric cost for 145,5 pounds, run 3 miles in
21 minutes. Each mile about 1600 meters,
3 miles = 3 x 1600 meters = 4800 meters
Speed 4800 21 = 228,6 m/min
See table 6.9< oxygen up take will be = 49,5 ml/kg/min
Body weight 145,5 pound = 66 kg.
VO will be (49,5 x 66) 1000 = 3,3 L/min
Within 21 min VO = 3,3 x 5 x 21 = 347 calories
Oxygen requirement estimates for
selected walking and jogging
