Body Systems

Nervous System

Control and communication network of the

body
It detects internal and external stimuli,
controls response to those stimuli and
integrates activities of organ systems
It controls everything that you do
Nervous System

Three main parts

Brain
Nerves
Spinal cord
Nervous System

The brain has several parts, each with a

specific task
Controls processing information, thinking,
breathing and heart beating
The spinal cord runs up and down the back

It is surrounded by vertebrae, which provide

the spinal cord with protection
Nervous System

A nerve is a bundle of cells called neurons

Nerves carry information from one place to

another
Sensory neurons get information from the
environment through the senses and sent
that information to the brain
Motor neurons carry information from the
brain to the muscles to perform an action
Nervous system

The spinal cord and the brain compose the

central nervous system
The other part of the nervous system is the
peripheral nervous system
The peripheral nervous system carries
nerve impulses from the brain and spinal
cord to the body
Nervous system

The peripheral nervous system transmits

sensory input from the body to the brain
It has two parts
Autonomic
Somatic
Nervous system

The autonomic system controls

involuntary things like your heart beating or
your lungs breathing
The somatic system controls voluntary
things like raising your hand or writing
notes
Easy way to remember it is AUTOnomic is
AUTOmatic
Epidermal System

The epidermal system is the outer-

covering of the body basically its the skin
It helps to prevent injury or dehydration,
regulate body temperature and excrete
small amounts of waste
Epidermal System

The integumentary system or the skin

provides sensory information and works
with other body systems
It is composed of two main layers, the
dermis and the epidermis
Epidermal System

The epidermis is the outer layer of skin

It is several layers thick and provides a

protective barrier for the body
Nerve endings are located in the skin and
send sensory information when detecting
heat, cold, pressure or pain
Epidermal System

The dermis lies below the epidermis and

contains several structures
Hair follicles and sweat glands are located
in the dermis
Hair follicles have a oil gland called a
sebaceous gland attached to them

Below the dermis is adipose tissue, or fat,

which helps insulate the body and provide
an energy reserve
