- Configure a static IGMP multicast group
- Replicate a multicast stream to multiple QAM channels
Topics:
- Unicast/Multicast Overview
- IGMP Overview
- Multicast Static Groups
- Multicast Configuration Procedure
- Channel Containers and Replication
6-179
What is Unicast?
Unicast is the delivery of information replicated for each
destination resulting in inefficient use of bandwidth.
Headend
Replicated
for each
destination
6-180
What is Multicast?
Multicast is the delivery of information to a group of
destinations points simultaneously using an optimal delivery
path to send the information only once, creating copies only
when the links to the destinations split.
Headend
Information
sent once
Duplicated
where needed
6-181
6-183
What is IGMP?
Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) is used to
signal membership in a particular group.
Devices listen for IGMP messages and send queries to
determine active groups.
Hosts send IGMP messages to devices to signal
membership.

The DEPI control plane dynamically creates MPT sessions between the
core and the D5 UEQ and allows the core to modify certain RF properties
of the QAM channels with which the sessions are associated.
Requires a control plane connection to exist on every GigE link that a
DEPI data session will be established upon.
- This results in the D5 UEQ having to support up to four individual DEPI control
plane endpoints, one for each of its four GigE ports.
The D5 UEQ GigE MAC redundancy feature :
- Supports a GigE port to be nominated as a backup for other ports
- Will continue to operate with the control plane connections active
10-350
10-351
DEPI traffic can be sent from the M-CMTS core to the D5 UEQ
using DMPT (DOCSIS MPEG-TS) traffic format
DEPI Control Plane is used by M-CMTS core devices to setup dynamic
DEPI Data Plane connections to the D5 UEQ
DEPI DMPT mode carries DOCSIS data and MAC frames as
MPEG packets.
The finalized MPEG packets are transported over IP to the D5
UEQ using two different approaches:
- Within L2TPv3 packets
- Directly in UDP/IP packets
Each DEPI DMPT flow is associated with a single QAM output
channel.
