From the graph of T1 versus T2 , the different angle of lap is applied
with the same lead on T2 start from 500g, 700g, 900g, 1100g and 1300g. At an angle 90o, the load needed for T1 to prevent slipping is 11.772N, 14.715N, 16.677N,21.582N and 27.468N.
When the angle of lap increasefrom 90 o to 180o , the value of T1 is
decrease. This also meant that when the angle of lap increase, the driving force decrease. At the end, for 180 o , T1 value is only 5.886N, 8.829N, 9.81N, 12.753N and 16.677N, which is much lower compare to 90o. Moreover, we also found that the load T1 increase linearly with the load at T2 DISCUSION
Coefficient of friction, =
At 90o, [T1/T2] = 2.26 = = 0.025
At 120o, [T1/T2] = 2.44 = = 0.020 At 150o, [T1/T2] = 2.63 = = 0.018 At 180o, [T1/T2] = 3.34 = = 0.018 DISCUSSION From the graph, T1 and T2 increase linearly with T1. Besides that, the load needed at T1 for flat belt is the highest while the v- belt with fit groove is the lowest. In other word, the flat belt needed higher tension to stop from slipping. Moreover, for the v- belt may avoid the slipping due to wedging action between the belt and v-groove pulley so the T1 is lower. The v-belt with large groove may decrease the wedging action between the belt and the large groove pulley. So it need higher tension compare to v-belt with fit groove. Hence, we can conclude that the more the wedging action, the lower the tension needed in T1. ADVANTAGES OF TRANSMISSION BELT No lubrication required or desired. Maintenance is minimal and infrequent. Belts dampen sudden shocks or change in loading. Quiet and smooth operation. DISADVANTAGES OF TRANSMISSION BELT Not suitable for high speed, high torque or high power transmission. Endless belts usually cannot be repaired when break. Length of endless belt cannot be adjusted. Adverse service environments ( extreame temperature ranges, high moisture, oily or chemically filled) can damage belts or cause slipping. ADVANTAGES OF ROLLER CHAIN No slippage between chain and sprocket teeth. Negligible stretch, allowing chains to carry heavy loads. Long shelf life because metal chain ordinary does not deteriorate with age and is unaffected by sun, reasonable range of heat and moisture and oil. Certain types can be replace without disturbing other component mounted on the same shaft as sprockets DISADVANTAGES OF ROLLER CHAIN Noise is usually higher than the belts. The lubrication attracts dirt which lead to wear problesm. Alignments is important as it affects life and stability. Life is usually low since and estimated 90%-95% of chain drives are improperly lubricated.
