What is the study of Ethics?
Ethics is the study of the principles of right and wrong, moral
conduct

Bioethics is a reflective examination of ethical issues in


health care, health science, and health policy.

Key questions: what is the right thing to do? And why?


What are our moral principles ?

Key contexts: genetics modification, euthanasia,


confidentiality, consent for treatment, abortion, animal testing
The four principles of Bio Ethics
1. Autonomy - the right for an individual to make his or her
own choice.

2. Beneficence - the principle of acting with the best interest of


the other in mind.

3. Non-maleficence - the principle that above all, do no harm,


as stated in the Hippocratic Oath.

4. Justice - a concept that emphasizes fairness and equality


among individuals.

Group discussion
Question1: Which of the 4 principles above do YOU think is the most
important one? And tell me why? Explain your reasoning.

Question2: Do you think it is right to experiment on animals in order to


save human beings? What is the reason for your answer? Who agrees?
Who disagrees? Explain why.

Question3: Who in the class is pro-abortion? Who is against? Anyone not


sure? What is your reason for your position? What do you think the law
should say in Mexico?

Question4: Should patients be allowed to end their own life if they are in
pain? Who agrees? Who disagrees? Why? If this was legal, how could it
be abused e.g. by a relative or other person?

right genetically modify humans? Why not? Who believes it
is justifiable?

confidentiality if a teenager goes to see a counselor,


should the parents be allowed to know what is discussed?
Explain your answer.
