Classroom

Procedures

By: Veronica Madden

The Problem is Not Discipline
The number one problem in the
classroom is the lack of procedures and
routines.

Establishing
procedures is one of the
key elements in being an effective
teacher.

Studentscannot follow procedures that

do not exist.
Classroom Management
Practicesand procedures that a teacher
uses to maintain an optimum
environment in which instruction and
learn can occur.

Effective
group management is about
preventing problems, not stopping
misbehavior that is already occurring.
Effective and Ineffective
Classrooms
What would you expect to see in an
effective classroom?

What would you expect to see in an

ineffective classroom?
Effective Classroom
The students are actively involved in
meaningful work.
The procedures govern what they do
and they understand how the class
functions.
The teacher, who is also involved in
work, is moving around the room,
helping, correcting, answering,
disciplining, encouraging, smiling, and
caring.
Ineffective Classroom
The students are in their seats doing
busywork or nothing.
The only person who is observed
working is the teacher.
The teacher controls the class.
Learning occurs only when students
are actively engaged and in control in
their own learning.
Discipline and Procedures
What is the difference?

Discipline concerns how student

behave.

Procedures concern how things are

done.
Why Procedures Are Important
Whydo you think procedures are
important?
They state what is expected of the
students.
They allow multiple activities to take place
without wasted time and confusion.
They reduce classroom disruptions.
They tell students how the classroom is
organized.
Procedures Are Part of Life
Where do we see procedures outside of
the classroom?

Airplanes

Lets practice this in an activity!
Students Seeking Help
Many students may need help or have a
request throughout the day.

Itis important to have ways for students

to be able to get your attention without
interrupting the class.
Methods for Getting the Teachers
Attention Without Interrupting the
Class
Hand Signal
Toilet Tissue Tube
Styrofoam Cup
Index Card

What If Procedures
Do Not Work?
Remindstudents of the procedures
when needed.

And whats the procedure please?

Helping the At-Risk
Student
Some students may struggle in the
classroom because they have not been
taught academic procedures.
Teaching these procedures can help
students to succeed.
Simple Academic Procedures
How to take lecture notes.
How to read a book.
How to do the homework.
How to work in groups.
How to understand the assignment.
How to study for the test.
Consistency
The most important factor that must be
established on the first day and week of
school is consistency.
Consistency means the classroom is
organized and predictable.
This allows the students to know the
procedures.
Changes
Procedures result in permanent behavior
changes.
Handling behavior problems only results
in temporary behavior changes.
Effective teachers manage their
classrooms with procedures and
routines.
Procedure for Transition
Close one Task
Give the student a time warning.
Prepare
Let the students know what you want them to
do. Example: Put away your reading books
and please pull out a pencil.
Refocus
Give instructions for the next lesson or
assignment. Example: Turn in your history
book to page 100.
Procedures for Groups

Individual Accountability
Evaluation Methods
Specify the Group Name
Naming the group gives it a purpose.

Consider calling your groups support

groups.

Support groups in the classroom allow

students to join together so they can care
for one another and accomplish goals
together.
Specify the Group Size
The
size of the group is a factor in how
many jobs are needed in order to
complete an activity.

Groupsize allows the students to be

assigned to specific tasks so that they
can complete the project as a team,
each having a part in it.
State the Purpose, Materials,
and Steps of the Activity
The activity should be structured.

Studentsneed to know what is to be

done, and how they should do it.
Teach the Procedures
Procedures allows the group to have
their own routine.
Students will know how to function
within the group.
Students know how to complete the
project.
Students know who to go to for help and
how to solve problems.
Hold the Individuals Accountable
for the Work of the Team
Theteacher acts as consultant to the
group.

Students are to solve problems as a

team.

The
groups is to work together to
complete the project as a whole.
The Class Runs Itself
The effective teacher spends most of
the first week teaching the students
how to follow classroom procedures.

Wrap Up!
Procedures are a key element of being
an effective teacher.
