GEORG CANTOR AND

SET THEORY

By: lvaro Gonzlez Moya

ABOUT HIS LIFE

Georg Cantor was born the March 3, 1845 in Saint
Petersburg,Russia. He was a German mathematician. He
inventedthe set theory.
After early education at home Cantor attended primary school in St
Petersburg, then in 1856 when he was eleven years old the family
moved to Germany.
In1862 Cantor had get his father's permission to study
mathematics at university. His studies at Zrich, were cut short by
the death of his father in June 1863. Cantor moved to the University
of Berlin.
In 1873 Cantor proved the rational numbers countable, i.e. they
may be placed in one-one correspondence with the natural
numbers. However his attempts to decide whether the real

At the end of May 1884 Cantor had the first recorded attack of
depression. He recovered after a few weeks.
Cantor retired in 1913 and spent his final years ill with little food
because of the war conditions in Germany. In June 1917 he entered
a sanatorium for the last time
He died of a heart attack the 6th of January 2016

SET THEORY
Set theory is the
branch of
mathematical logic
that studies sets.
Set theory begins with
the relation between an
objectoand a setA.
If o is a member (or
element) of A, write:

o A.

A
O a 9
6
8
7

INTERSECTIONS
Intersection of the
sets A and B, denoted
A B, is the set of all
objects that are
members of both A
and B
If we look at the
picture, whe can see
that, for example, the
intersection between
A (Soccer) and B
(Tennis) is casey and
drew.

SET DIFFERENCES
Set differences of
U and A, denoted
U \ A, is the set of
all members of U
that are not
members of A.
So, taking the same
picture, it will be written as:

Soccer (U) \ Tennis

(A) = alex, hunter

SUBSET RELATION
A relationbetween
two sets is the subset
relation, also
calledset inclusion. If
all the members of
setAare also
members of setB,
thenAis asubsetofB,
denotedAB*
*This is an illustrative photo. Its not wellrepresented. The binary relation between
two sets is more precise and only used on
other concepts.

So, it will be:

AB = 1,2,2,3

B Group
A group:
1. 2
2. 3
