A CASE IN POINT
To demonstrate how an HRMA can be used, we present the results of
a field study of a high technology corporation's human resources
function.
Questionnaires were collected from and interviews conducted with
78 of the 80 individuals who administer the human resources function
(35 professionals,45 support staff) and 42 of the 48 clients they
named as their most frequent contacts. Both groups were asked to
evaluate various aspects of human resources activities and to assess
areas of agreement and disagreement over work priorities.

A CASE IN POINT
Analysis of data from both internal and external sources made it
increasingly clear that the human resources staff was an extremely
high-performing unit.
Most staff activities were highly operational, with little strategic
content. Because the corporation's mission statement set strategic
human resources planning as a goal for the human resources function.
The results of the HRMA made the staff begin to develop a tactical
plan that would move them from purely operational activities toward
a more strategic
