My Vision for ELLs


Be active and engaged learners who will learn English
while learning the Ontario Curriculum
Feel that their identity is reflected in the classroom and
in their learning
Believe that their first language and culture are
welcomed, respected and valued in the classroom
Confidently express themselves
Be involved in setting goals and achieve challenging
expectations, given the supports they require
Plan their path by recognizing their strengths and
interests and following their aspirations
Have positive experiences in the classroom where they
feel safe and important
Feel empowered to become active participants both
academically and socially

ACTION PLAN
In order to achieve the vision
goal for ELLs, the following
components will be presented
as part of the Action Plan:
1) Goals and Procedures
2) Resources
3) Expectations
4) Instructional Strategies
and Accommodations

1. GOALS AND PROCEDURES


Goals: The primary goals for an ELL teacher is to deliver programs and
services to help ELLs achieve success as they learn the language and
content of their grades curriculum while maintaining respect for
first language knowledge.
Reception
- Families welcomed by team, taken on tour of school, have a meeting
to welcome family to school and explain school routines and procedures,
provide access to interpreter and agencies, if needed (i.e. Settlement
workers,
etc.)
- Signs in various languages to welcome families (languages of the school
community)
- Ensure proper pronunciation of name is used/learned

Classroom Routines
Introduce classroom teacher to student and other teachers student
will have
- Have peer/buddy system in place to help transition student during
first few days
- Package of information/newsletter from classroom teacher/school
explaining routines/rules
- Have dual language resources/books availabe on display
- Pair visuals with verbal signs (e.g. Washroom, etc.)
- Have assistive technology available, if needed
- Have initial meeting/interview to learn more about student

What kinds of multicultural materials will be incorporated into lessons?


Dual language books/resources
Reading and writing in first language encouraged

4. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

4. INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES
What technological tools could facilitate learning?
ipads (with appropriate apps and camera to take photos)
programs to assist learning, reading and writing (i.e. Google read and
write, Kurzweil, etc.)
interactive white boards
D2L for student/home connection and ease of finding information
Programs such as padlet, pixton, gliffy, google slides, go animate,
powtoon, discussion boards, etc.
