GRANT A REQUEST
Granting Request is to express a wish or ask for to
grant a request in a polite or formal way often
followed by an infi nitive or by a clause beginning with
that.
Granting Request artinya kalo secara umum adalah
cara kita memenuhi permintaan seseorang secara
sopan

ASKING SOMEONE FOR SOMETHING

Can I borrow your pen ?
Could I have a seat ?
Can't I sit beside you ?
May I use your computer ?

Can I borrow..?
Could I have .. ?
Can't I .. beside you ?
May I use your ..?

ASKING SOMEONE TO DO
SOMETHING
Can you give me the book ?
Could you phone me at 7 o'clock ?
Would you mind repairing my watch ?
Do you think you could take me to the shop ?
I wonder if you could write me an application letter ?

THE EXPRESSION TO ACCEPT IT

Of course(tentu)
OK(Ok)
Sure, you can(tentu, kamu bisa)
Ok,no problem(ok, tidak masalah)
Certainly not(tentu saja tidak)
Why not? You can..(mengapa tidak? Kamu bisa)
Yes, you may..(ya, kamu boleh)
Ok, here you are(Ok, ini)

THE EXPRESSION TO REFUSE IT

I'm afraid, I ... (give you reason).
I'm sorry. I can't.
I'd like to, but ... (give your reason).

THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT

MAKING A REQUEST
"Would you mind..." is followed by a gerund
(verb+ing)

Example:"Would you mind lending me your

book?
The response to the following request:
A: "Would you mind giving me your book?
The response is either
"No, I don't mind."(which is a positive response to the
request. It means that I accept to lend you my book)
or "Yes." (which is a negative response to the request.
It means that I don't want to lend you my book.)

Would you mind . Khusus would you mind kata kerja
setelahnya harus berupa Verb ing. Dan jawaban untuk
menyanggupinya adalah NO, berbeda dengan yang 3
sebelumnya, kalau mau dimintai tolong
jawabannya YESdan kata kerjanya adalah Infi nitive
atau Verb1
Can you. Ini adalah frasa yang paling kasar dibandingkan
yang lainnya. Ini biasanya permintaan sopan tapi agak
marah. Misalnya kita kesel sama teman karena berisik:
can you shut up please ( tolonglah jangan berisik ).

Teacher : Good morning, Ridho.
Ridho
: How are you, sir?
Teacher : Im fi ne, thank you. And you?
Ridho
: Im fi ne.
Teacher : This is your story telling class. Could
anybody please tell the class a story?
Ridho

Teacher : What kind of story do you want to hear?
Ridho
: Could you please tell us a ghost story?
Teacher : Okay.

 Jimmy: Jessica, Can you do me a favour?

Jessica:Sure, I will Jimmy. (Granting Request)
Jimmy: Could you please pass me a Chemistry notes
now? (Requesting)
Jessica: OK. Here it is Jimmy (Granting Request)
