Detailed class analysis of

music magazine NME

Colour Scheme: There is a

reoccurring colour theme
through the cover page of
this magazine. Majority of
the colours on the cover
magazine are red, black
and white. These primary
colours are added to the
magazine to stand out as
white and black can be
written on top of most
colours and still are easily
seen. The colour red
releases a connotation of
unisex target audience.
This promotes dominance
in the rap industry.

Masthead: The Masthead of

NME is very overpowering and
boldly written. With taking over
half of the top part of the page,
it is presented as throwing its
self at the audience, this is
because of the red colour
making it stand out. This
masthead is here to show that
the magazine is easily
recognised, NME is a well
known magazine company that
has many issues, this also
highlights the fact that people

this variety of different artists
show there is a large target
audience. A mixture of different
bands and solo artists shows
that many issues has been
made, showing the wide range
of information told by NME.
Cover lines are put in place in
order to show the buyer exactly
what is going to be topic inside
the magazine past the front
cover. As this magazine has a

Main Cover Line:

Throughout the initial view
of the cover we see the
cover lines as very eye
catching. The anchorage
cover line shows speech
of Dizzee Rascal that is
written on a slant, this
may reflect Dizzies
personality and reveal
that his maybe reckless
and doesnt follow the
rules.

Connotation: There are

many aspects to this
magazine cover that can
give us an insight into the
first impression of this
magazine. His trainers
stereotypically connote that
he is hip and street. This
connotation allows others to
also wear trainers engaging
more people into reading this
magazine.

Genre & Mise-en-scene: This magazine genre for this issue

is quite self explanatory. This is due to the Mise-en-scene on
the cover. The Mise-en-scene demonstrates that the genre is
Rap/Hip hop. This is recognisable as many elements hint such
as the controversial background.

Model/group: This celebrity is shown in a crouched position,

followed with a long shot. The model has a surprised facial
expression demonstrating he is a fun person. His accessory's
include a gold chain, baggy bleak clothing and wild coloured
trainers. This is stereotypical of the black rapper, as they
wear bling and oversized clothing. This rapper is
contradictory to the main focuses that the magazine NME
likes to write about. This show that they are reaching out of
their comfort zone and attempting to reach an even bigger
target audience than rock bands and indie artists.
Genre: the main genre of this magazine proves to be Hip
hop. This is stated as the Model is of Hip Hop sound and
creation, this is also shown as a couple of the cover lines say
other hip hop/ rappers names.

Niche Market/target audience: A smaller group of target

audience is not shown as NME present such a large target
audience. This is good as then no audience can complain as
they cater for a wide range of people. This can create
meaning for the audience as they would think this magazine
is successful because a vast audience makes us think that the
publisher is good at what they do.

Rule of Thirds: Rule of thirds is used as the Masthead is at

the top of the screen, the Model image is in the centre and
the barcode is at the base of the cover. This is ideal for an
audience as they see exactly what the publisher want them to
see in a Z order shape across the whole item. This gives order
to the magazine from the beginning showing that it will be
ordered throughout the whole of the magazine.

Representation: Dizzee
Rascal is represented as a
hooligan style guy. This is
shown as his body language is
low and crouched, the camera
shot is slightly off angle and
the backdrop is different. All of
these aspects show the
representation of a little
craziness. Dizzee Rascal may
have been made to look
differently to how he really is,
this may be because his
celebrity life differs to his real
life. A good example for this
would be his stage name
Dizzee Rascal Rascal may
represent that he is out of
hand and causes chaos. This is
clever of Dizzee as people
only see what he chooses to
show them.

Barcode: This barcode is

placed at the bottom the of
magazine right way up, this
may be because all of the
NME magazines have the
same barcode. This may also
be because it fits in that way.
Publishers do everything for
effect therefore it may have
been done for effect in using
the Rule of thirds. The
barcode has the issue
number and the date all in
one place this is because

anchorage that Dizzee Rascal is
spreading joy around the world,
man this is slang terms and
even gives us an insight into the
genre of the magazine being
analysed. This tells the audience
that this magazine will highlight
the fact that Dizzee wants to
spread joy. Also it shows that he
coming back into his music
business as he hasn't been

Icon: Dizzee Rascal may be shown as an icon to others as he

has done things for charity and others in the past. He is trying
to spread positivity to this generation, this shows he is a
positive idol for children and their parents wont be unhappy
with their children supporting him. This is also good for his
record label as he used to be quite abrupt and maybe this can
show his old audience that everyone changes.
Target Audience Profile/lifestyle: This hip hop star has a
good lifestyle this is shown through clothes and style. Dizzee
looks happy with his life this may be due to the fact that he is
coming back into the music business. This may also be
because he had a long break to think about what he did with
his life and how he could change it.
Direct Address: The direct address of this magazine is the
public. This is because he says around the world this does
not direct exactly to a person. This applies to everyone as a
whole.

Strap line: The strap line is the recognisable tagline that is

there. Many taglines are used on this page making is
noticeable for the audience. The main tagline as quoted by
Dizzee Rascal is memorable as he wants to impact peoples
lives. This is good for the audiences reaction to the front
cover. of Address: He is looking directly at the audience
Mode
with happy eyes. This can motivate the audience into buying
the magazine. With the main model looking directly down the
camera this can show that he is making you a part of the
magazine and making you included. This is good for the NME
magazine as it may demonstrate that the contents of this
magazine is purely fun and no boring information included.
His cheerful facial expressions and broad body language can

Layout: the layout of this magazine contents page is

new and I have never seen a contents page like it. This
non chronological contents page is mismatched and
original. This intrigues the reader as they have to read it
to enable what they want to fine, although it isn't that
hard to do. The magazine contents page is separated
into different categories to make sure the reader doesnt
get too confused with the setup. Another headline is
highlighted in the contents page. This shows even more
information about what is inside this band magazine. On
the left hand side of the magazine shows a band index,
this is showing multiple bands and what I'm guessing the
pages they would be seen on. This is good for the
audience as it gives them a page reference to find them.
Masthead: The masthead o the contents page includes
a NME notice at the beginning of contents. This is good
for the magazine as it shows the viewer the magazine
they're reading if they're flicking through many trying to
choose one. This is also good as it is in red, the original
colour of the masthead on the cover page.

Article Titles/content: The content titles include what

is inside the magazine. They're very chatty articles and
they give a brief idea of the information given on the
whole article touring special.

Page numbers: I expect that the page numbers are

emboldened in red. This makes it easier for the audience
to define the page numbers from any other numbers
given in reference to information. This is a good touch by
the publisher as they make it easier for the public. The
audience would hopefully agree.

Main Image: The main image is not an idol of any

celebrity status. This can show that this magazine also
lets the audience know about the background people in
the businesses. This is a positive representation of this
magazine as they cater for all types of jobs in the music
industry.
Date/issue number: The date is now shown at the top
of the screen. This is good as it shows it fully of when it
was published in order for the audience to know if
they're up to date.

Pictures linked to articles featured in the

magazine: The picture linked with an article is a blonde
woman showing her tour bus. This is here to show the
audience that there is more in this magazine than
expected. This magazine also lets the reader know how
the artists get to and from different countries. The
audience would like this as they have an insight into
what its like to be a celebrity, even one of their own
idols. This picture tells us about the genre as it has
different artist cultures and types taken by the bus.
Certain artists demonstrate different genres.
Borders around images: The boarders around the
image includes a stereotypical clipboard style boarder.
This is intriguing as it shows that the publishers car
about small details to catch the viewers eye. This is good
as the audience will know that they care about the
appearance of the magazine as well as the content.

Captions in pictures: The caption is long in this picture

quote. It shows page references and tour dates and
activities. It is also chatty and informal, showing that it is
trying to be realistic and relatable.

Fonts: There is a range of different fonts used in the

contents page to give a bit of variation the text. The
range of fonts may make the contents page feel
mismatched and out of place but also the publisher did
it in a clever way to make it more fun. Font colour is
also crucial to create selection.

Sub-headings: news, radar, reviews, live!, feature and

plus. All of these subheadings show that the magazine
has a lot to offer. The subheading plus demonstrates
that there isn't enough subheading to cover the bursting
information inside. This tells us about the genre as it
highlights what is done inside the magazine.

Target Audience: This carry's on the target audience

as hip hop and maybe indie as the artists suggested and
recognized are indie bands and hip hop. And some rock.
The genre and target audiences are a large range and
have a lot of variety.

Shot types: This shot type is a medium long shot

showing the torso and lower. This shot emphasizes her
fashion sense and facial expressions. The contemporary
style may suggest that this magazine is indie and
different. Showing that many target audiences can follow
along.
Mode of Address/Language used: This magazine
contents attracts the audience as it is realistic and
modern. This contents communicates with the audience
as it uses modern slang Thank god shows the audience
that they can relate to this magazine. Thank god is not
used in an offensive way, just purely the way this
generation compare and converse with each other.

Main Image: Dizzee Rascal is taking

up an entire page of this NME
magazine with a long/medium body
shot. This shot shows him being
mischievous vandalizing the walls. This
main image shows Dizzee in designer
clothes showing his wealth.

Representation: Dizzee is
represented as being a criminal in this
image. This picture stereotypes black
hip hop artists as being offenders, this
is negative as not all hip hop artists
will do this, also being negative as
parents of children who idolize this
male would be disgusted as the image
doesnt show the law being followed,
not representing Dizzee in a good way.
Column width and positioning: The
column and width the publisher has
used shows that they know what
they're doing. This will intrigue an
audience as it is neat and in
proportion. The viewer would find this
pleasing to the eye and easier to read.
If fits well with the props around.

Page numbers: Page numbers are places in the

bottom left of the page. This very subtle touch can
add a lot of effect for the audience allowing them
to know that the publisher doesn't give up on little
touches just to make the news valid

Large letter start of article (drop

cap): The From tags to riches title
shows that the image isn't all that it
seems. Dizzee is highlighting the fact
that he has changed from his old ways
which evidently seem to be a
vandalizer. This connotes that he is
now a better person than he used to
be, all to do with the fact he now has
money. Tags is a slang word used for
graffiti, youngers tag there names to
show that the place they live is the
place they own. The representation of
him being a bad person is now flipped.

Font and type size: As the contents page, this

magazine has different fonts and sizing. This shows
controversy and difference. This is good for the
magazine as attracts others to read at it is interestingly
set up.

Connotation: The beer bottles and

old cassette player reveals that his
may have been his past and now he
has moved on the his future. These
bad to good connotations show that he
has changed as a person and now he
wants to spread joy around the world,
man. he may have loved to party but
now he has changed from Tags to
riches.

Colors: The colour scheme has stayed

the same throughout the pages I have
analyzed. This has been mainly red (his
jacket) and white. These colour
schemes show dominance and power.
This may connote that he has
dominance over the hip hop scene. The
graffiti adds colour to the page and can
encourage the reader to want to buy
the magazine. The black bold writing is
also successful as it is well seen and
makes a statement.

Branding

Branding: Dizzee may be branding

someone's clothes as he has had a
photoshoot for this magazine. He may
be promoting others to buy this range
of clothing, this is good as many
people then get added into creating
the final magazine.

Use of space: Space is used well I this magazine double page spread as every piece of pace is filled with an image
or information. The publisher has done this to give as much information to the audience as he can. It also looks as
though there isn't too much writing on here. This is done as the picture shows a lot of information. The little props
such as the beer bottles giver information, maybe even more than the actual words. This shows the audience that
the publisher is very clever as he can show that you don't just give information and flair through words and typed
words.
Basic layout : Basic layout is crucial as the model is central and takes up a lot of space. I can see the grid method
as the model and wording is placed exact. The layout is very plain crisp and clear. It is worth nothing that Dizzee
takes the center of the double page spread, this is pleasing to the eye and shows that the layout is very good. The
font is small letting the viewer know that they have condensed the words down as much as they can for the
audiences convenience.

This magazine is connected by a few elements that run throughout

each of the pages I have covered.

Colour scheme is one of the elements that connects this magazine together. The red
colour for NME shows that Dizzee controls this magazine issue. The viewer knows that
the target audience is meant for all genders of about the ages of 15-25, this is because
Dizzee Rascal inspires the younger generation to stay young and have fun. Also whites
and blacks have been used to highlight and show the dominance of the headlines and
backgrounds. The theme is very modern and eye catching allowing the reader to make
their own decision on the magazine.
Popups are used on the majority of pages to show that you get a lot more than just
information in the magazine. Another point that is kept the same is the genre. The hip
hop genre is kept to create the sane meaning. This Dizzee Rascal edition is serious and
he isn't a child anymore.
Font and design is used to connote a new and fresh style. The different fonts and styles
capture an audience and keep them intrigued as many magazines dont do this. This
makes them original and stand out, connecting all three of the pages together.
Mode of address. The dialect that the magazine uses is London slang . Throughout all
three of these articles slang and informal speech is used. This connects them all as
they all speak to the viewer to relate to them, showing compassion and reality.
Positive about his comeback, also all three of these texts are positive about his
comeback into the music career. This is good as it puts Dizzee in a good light, allowing
him to get more popular. Comparing his past to his present is also added into this
article lot. This is because theyre highlighting his change from then till now.
