Introduction
introducing KSSR (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah) or
the Primary School Standards-Based Curriculum in 2011
starting Year 1 cohort.
the Standards-Based English Language Curriculum (SBELC)
was designed
Curriculum change involves the inclusion of basic reading
literacy, phonics, penmanship, and language arts as the new
curriculum content.
emphases on critical and creative thinking skills as well as
reasoning skills that are incorporated in the learning
standards
KSSR has presented a different view of curriculum that shifts the focus
away from memorization and rote learning toward standards-based
approach.
There are several forces promoting this shift,
1. global challenges of the 21st century,
2. recent advances in theories of learning,
3. the dawning of the information age,
4. the New Economic Model and UNESCO four pillars of education:
the national standards for English language curriculum, instruction & assessment
were developed on the basis of these inquiries:
o What do pupils need to know about the English language, and what should they be
able to do?
o How do we determine when pupils know the English language that we want them
to know and be able to do?
o What do we want the English teachers to know and be able to do?
