Magnetism Force

Matthews Cornejo

Objective:
Discover the relation between the spinning time of a
spinning top and the magnetic force intensity.

Magnetism

Magnetic force, attraction or repulsion that arises between electrically

charged particles because of their motion. It is the basic force
responsible for such effects as the action of electric motors and the
attraction of magnets for iron. Electric forces exist among stationary
electric charges; both electric and magnetic forces exist among moving
electric charges. The magnetic force between two moving charges may
be described as the effect exerted upon either charge by a magnetic
field created by the other.

Tesla or Gauss
Units of measure of magnetism

Tesla (unit of the international system D EU IDADES) is also defined as the

induction of a magnetic field which exerts a force of 1 N (newton) on a load
of 1 C (Coulomb) moving at speed of 1 m/s within the field and
perpendicular to the magnetic field lines. What is: 1 T = 1 Nsm1 C1
equivalent unit in the Cegesimal system of units (CGS) is the gauss: 1 T =
10,000 G a gauss (G) is a unit of magnetic field of the Cegesimal system of
units (CGS), named in honor of the mathematician and German physicist
Carl Friedrich Gauss. One gauss is defined as one maxwell per square
centimeter. 1 gauss = 1 maxwell / cm2

Investigating Question
Is there a relation between the spinning time of a spinning top
and the magnetic force intensity?

Hypotesis
There is a relation between the spinning time of a
spinning top and the magnetic force intensity, because
than more intensity and force has the magnetic field,
the spinning time will increase.

Variables

Independent Variable: Intensity of magnetic field

Dependent VarIable: Spinning time of spinning top

Constant Variable: Spinning tops mass quantity and the inicial velocity
of the spinning top

Materials
For performing our experiment we used:

4 _ gauss magnets

1 small _ gauss magnet for the spinning top to repel the magnets

1 modified toy (Beyblade)

Modified toy launcher

CD case

To collect data we used:

Chronometer

Notebook and pencil (to take notes)

Procedure
1.

First, we chose a toy that could spin and that could be easily transformed into a
spinning top.

2.

Second, we modified the toy and we inserted a small magnet in the spinning
top.

3.

Then, we started calibrating the spinning top, so as to balance it. This process
took most of the time, due to the fact that we were planning that the spinning
top might levitate.

4.

Once the spinning top was completely calibrated and balanced, we begun
experimenting by carrying out a set of tests that involved using 4 magnets (with
similar gauss measures) trying 4 times with each amount of gauss, so as to
discover the spinning time of the spinning top (in seconds) using the measures
of the intensity of the magnetic field.

5.

Later we collected data and translate it to a general table, where we got the
average results as an outcome, and we can also make a graph using the
collected data.

6. After that, we repite the afore mentioned set of

tests and gather the results (this time we tried 5
times with each amount of gausess), we also
translate them to a table where we got again the
average results as an outcome. Nevertheless we
can also make a graph using the data.
7. Finally we compare our average results in
another table, and we conclude the
experimentation by stating our last ideas and
conclusions.

Conclusions
After having concluded our experiment, we can conclude
that:
Our hypothesis was correct because there is a relation
between the spinning time of a spinning top and the
magnetic force intensity, because than more intensity
and force has the magnetic field, the spinning time
will increase.

Limitations

At the beguining of this fair, our group was planning to make the
spinning top levitate, by using the magnetic force. This represented the
biggest limitation that we had, due to the fact that
