CLIMATE AND WEATHER OF THE PHILIPPINES

CLIMATE REFERS TO THE LONGTERM MANIFESTATION OF

WEATHER. IT IS THE
STATISTICAL COLLECTIVE
WEATHER CONDITION DURING
A SPECIFIED INTERVAL OF TIME.

WHAT IS WEATHER ?

Weather is the condition of

the atmosphere at a
particular time.

The Prevailing Wind System

over the Philippines are as
follows:

NORTHEAST MONSOON
prevails
from
November
to February.

SOUTHWEST MONSOON
prevails
during the
month of
July,
August and
September

CLIMATIC TYPES IN THE

PHILIPPINES

FIRST TYPE . Two pronounced

season; one dry from November
to April, the other wet during
the rest of the year.

SECOND TYPE . No dry

season; with a very
pronounced maximum rain
period from November to
January.

THIRD TYPE . Seasons not very

pronounced; relatively dry during
from November to April and wet
during the rest of the year. The
maximum rain period is not very
pronounced, with the short dry
season lasting only from one to
three months.

FOURTH TYPE . Rainfall more

or less evenly distributed
throughout the year.

OCEAN

This is the widest and largest body of water in the

world. Huge sea vessels can travel here. There are
five oceans in the world:
Pacific Ocean ocean closest to the
Philippines. This is also the largest ocean.
Atlantic Ocean
Southern Ocean
Indian Ocean
Arctic Ocean

SEA
The sea is salty. A lot of aquatic resources live in the
sea. Examples of seas are the Philippine Sea and the
South China Sea (which is the largest sea near the
Philippines).

LAKE

A lake is a body of water surrounded by land. There are many

lakes in the Philippines. Lake water is fresh, and some of the fish
that you can find in Philippine lakes are hito (catfish), dalag,
tilapia, and ayungin.
Examples of lakes are: Taal Lake and Lanao Lake

CHANNEL
A channel is a wide body of water found between islands. This has
to be crossed into order to move from one island to another.
Examples of channels are: Babuyan Channel (found in northern
Luzon),and Balintang Channel (separates Batanes from the
Babuyan Islands)

WATERFALL
Waterfalls fall from a high place. Examples are:
Tinago Falls (found in Iligan City), and
Katibawasan Falls (found in Camiguin).

BAY
This serves as a harbor for sea-faring vessels in the Philippines.
Passengers ride here, and goods can be loaded for transport to
different places. Manila Bay is known for its beautiful sunsets.
Examples are: Subic Bay, and Manila Bay.

STRAIT
This is a narrow body of water, which separates two
large land forms. Examples are: San Juanico Strait
which is found between Samar and Leyte. This is the
narrowest strait in the Philippines.

GULF
This is part of the ocean, and can be found at the opening of the sea. This can
be used as a port for sea vessels. You can also fish here.
Examples: Lingayen Gulf found near Pangasinan, and
Ragay Gulf found
near Camarines
Norte.

RIVER
The river is a wide body of water that flows towards the sea. It has fresh
water, so fresh-water fishes are harvested from rivers.
Examples of rivers are: Cagayan River
(the longest and
largest river in the
Philippines), Pasig
River (a river that
can be seen in the
city)

STREAM OR BROOK
This is a small body of flowing water. The source
is a spring.

CREEK
This is shallow and smaller than a stream. The
water is used by farmers to irrigate their rice
fields.

SPRING
This is the smallest body of water. The water come from
beneath the ground, and can be either hot or cold. Hot
springs can be found in areas near volcanoes.
Examples: Bukal ng Bundok Makiling, Tiwi Hot
Spring

Of the 2,400 fish species found in the country. 65 have good commercial value. Other
marine products includecorals,pearls,crabsandseaweeds.
Some of the countries bestsalt water fishingareas are found in Sintangki Island in
Sulu, Estancia in Bohol, Malampaya in Palawan, Lingayen Gulf in Pangasinan, San Miguel
lake in Camarines Norte, Bantayan Channel in Cebu, and the seas of Quezon and Sorsogon.
On the other hand, among our biggest fishing areas are Laguna de Bay, Bombon Lake in
Batangas, Bato Lake in Camarines Sur, Naujan Lake in Mindoro and Mainit lake in Agusan
del Norte.

THE PHILIPPINES IN TERMS OF MINERAL

RESOURCES IS BEING ATTRIBUTED TO ITS
LOCATION AT THE WESTERN FRINGES OF THE SOCALLED PACIFIC RING OF FIRE. GLOBALLY, WE ARE
RANKED 5TH AS MOST MINERALIZED COUNTRY IN
THE WORLD.

AROUND 9 MILLION HECTARES, OF 30 MILLION

HECTARES, ARE BELIEVED TO CONTAIN IMPORTANT
METALLIC MINERAL DEPOSITS. THE COUNTRYS
ESTIMATED MINERAL RESERVES ARE PLACED AT
ABOUT 14.5 BILLION METRIC TONS OF METALLIC
MINERALS.

AMONG OUR IMPORTANT METALLIC MINERALS FOUND IN ABUNDANCE IN

VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTRY INCLUDE GOLD, COPPER, NICKEL,
SILVER.
THE MOST PROLIFIC COPPER AND GOLD PRODUCERS IN THE PHILIPPINES
ARE FOUND IN THE BAGUIO AND MANKAYAN DISTRICTS, PROVINCE OF
BENGUET; ALTHOUGH THE SURIGAO-DAVAO DISTRICTS ARE ALSO
CONTRIBUTING MUCH TO PHILIPPINE GOLD PRODUCTION. MAJOR
PRODUCERS OF NICKEL ARE IN PALAWAN AND SURIGAO.

THE METALLIC MINERALS

MINERAL RESOURCES
MINERALS ARE NATURAL SUBSTANCES -- USUALLY COMPRISING "INORGANIC
ELEMENT OR COMPOUND, HAVING AN ORDERLY INTERNAL STRUCTURE AND
CHARACTERISTICS, CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, CRYSTAL FORM, AND PHYSICAL
PROPERTIES" (NAMRIA-DENR, 1991). ANY CONCENTRATION OF THESE MINERALS,
WITH A POTENTIAL ECONOMIC VALUE THAT CAN BE EXTRACTED AT A PROFIT, IS
CONSIDERED A MINERAL RESOURCE.

GOLD

IT IS A BRIGHT, SLIGHTLY REDDISH YELLOW,

DENSE, SOFT, MALLEABLE AND DUCTILE
METAL. BAGUIO AND PARACALE, MASBATE,
SURIGAO AND MASARA
JEWELRIES, METAL AND OPTICS COATING
One of the most popular mineral in
the world because of its value. Used
in making rings, necklaces and
more. Popular looking like a Gold
bar. Rumors says that Yamashita hid
his Gold here in the Philippines.

Copper

It is a ductile metal with very high thermal and

electrical conductivity. Pure copper is soft and
malleable; a freshly exposed surface has a
reddish-orange color. It is used as a conductor of
heat and electricity.

Silver
Common Use: jewelry, silverware, dental industry, photograph
Description: Silver is actually the highest electrical and thermal
conductor. but not typically use because of its higher price than
copper.

Nickel
It is a silvery-white lustrous metal
with a slight golden tinge. Nickel
belongs to the transition metals and
is hard and ductile.

South of Luzon, Coto, Zambales

Northern Luzon

Common Use: Metal Additive, Chemical

use

Description: It is one of the most
important mineral that is used in
alloy making. Added because of its
hardness and allows less oxidation
and corrosion to a metal once added
with chromite.

Iron

Iron ore, one of the

Philippines largest
mineral deposits, is
not being extracted
at present. This was
due to the higher
cost of production,
making the local
prices of iron not
competitive to world
prices.
