Introduction
Tire/road-noise is the main source of noise for road vehicles at speeds upto 50
km/h.
The physical mechanism that is considered to be the main contributor to the
tire/road noise is the tread hitting the surface of the road causing vibrations
radiating as noise into the air.
Another important contributor of tire/road noise is called air-pumping mechanism
which can be explained as air getting trapped between tread and surface, getting
compressed and decompressed as the tread is free in the air.
The acceptable range of noise level is 60-80 db. Here the noise level
obtained from the Bangalore case study is 94-102db.This range
slightly more than the normal range which has harmful effect on human
life. This case study also shows that tire/road noise contribute to noise
problems.
Literature Review
Many hundreds of papers have been written on the subject of tire/pavement
noise. To conduct the specific search for this project, some criteria were
established before reviewing these in detail (1).
The first level of filter was that the work was not entirely analytical and that the
measurements were not exclusively pass-by or wayside measurements (2).
The second level was that measurements were performed on pavement, not on
road-wheels in a laboratory environment (2).
From Research Paper we studied the following method of tire/road noise
measurement.
Drum method
Coast by method

Objective
The aim of this project is to look into the possibilities of doing tire/road
measurements easier, faster and cheaper.
Comparison between the measurement methods currently being used to new
methods.
To calculate the tire/road sound pressure levels directly from looking at road
texture data.

Problem formulation
A planning stage of how to build the new measurement setup will be perform.
CPX measurements with the new CPX setup in combination with pass-by
measurements will be done.
Comparisons between similar measurements also need to be done.

Methodology
Study of the available measurement setups
One possible setup is mounting microphones close to the tire directly on the
vehicle similar to the CPX-method but without the trailer and without enclosure
and instead using windscreens upstream in the wind flow of the microphone to
reduce the wind induced noise. This suggestion will discard due to risks of debris
hitting microphones and uncertainty of the stability of windscreens at higher
wind/vehicle speed.
