nty-anatas tu yogo sti

na caikntam ananata
na cti-svapna-lasya
jgrato naiva crjuna
There is no possibility of ones
becoming a yog, O Arjuna, if
one eats too much or eats too
little, sleeps too much or does
not sleep enough. 6.16

hras tv api sarvasya

tri-vidho bhavati priya
yajas tapas tath dna
te bhedam ima u
Even the food each person prefers is
of three kinds, according to the
three modes of material nature.
The same is true of sacrifices,
austerities and charity. Now hear of
the distinctions between them.17.7

yu-sattva-balrogyasukhaprti-vivardhan
rasy snigdh sthir hdy
hr sttvika-priy
Foods dear to those in the mode of
goodness increase the duration of
life, purify ones existence and give
strength, health, happiness and
satisfaction. Such foods are juicy,
fatty, wholesome, and pleasing to
the heart.17.8

kav-amla-lavaty-uatkarka-vidhina
hr rjasasye
dukha-okmaya-prad
Foods that are too bitter, too sour,
salty, hot, pungent, dry and
burning are dear to those in the
mode of passion. Such foods cause
distress, misery and disease.17.9

yta-yma gata-rasa
pti paryuita ca yat
ucchiam api cmedhya
bhojana tmasa-priyam
Food prepared more than three hours
before being eaten, food that is
tasteless, decomposed and putrid,
and food consisting of remnants and
untouchable things is dear to those
in the mode of darkness17.10

Anger
tri-vidha narakasyeda
dvra nanam tmana
kma krodhas tath lobhas
tasmd etat traya tyajet
There are three gates leading to this hell
lust, anger and greed. Every sane
man should give these up, for they lead
to the degradation of the soul 16.21

dukhev anudvigna-man
sukheu vigata-spha
vta-rga-bhaya-krodha
sthita-dhr munir ucyate

One who is not disturbed in mind even

amidst the threefold miseries or
elated when there is happiness, and
who is free from attachment, fear
and anger, is called a sage of steady
mind2.56

dhyyato viayn pusa

sagas tepajyate
sagt sajyate kma
kmt krodho bhijyate
While contemplating the objects
of the senses, a person develops
attachment for them, and from
such attachment lust develops,
and from lust anger arises 2.62

krodhd bhavati sammoha

sammoht smti-vibhrama
smti-bhrad buddhi-no
buddhi-nt praayati
From anger, complete delusion
arises, and from delusion
bewilderment of memory. When
memory is bewildered, intelligence
is lost, and when intelligence is
lost one falls down again into the
material pool. 2.63

kma ea krodha ea
rajo-gua-samudbhava
mahano mah-ppm
viddhy enam iha vairiam
It is lust only, Arjuna, which is born
of contact with the material mode
of passion and later transformed
into wrath, and which is the alldevouring sinful enemy of this
world. 3.37

yasmn nodvijate loko

lokn nodvijate ca ya
harmara-bhayodvegair
mukto ya sa ca me priya
He for whom no one is put into
difficulty and who is not
disturbed by anyone, who is
equipoised in happiness and
distress, fear and anxiety, is very
dear to Me 12.15

gun etn attya trn

deh deha-samudbhavn
janma-mtyu-jar-dukhair
vimukto mtam anute
When the embodied being is able to
transcend these three modes
associated with the material body, he
can become free from birth, death,
old age and their distresses and can
enjoy nectar even in this life 14.20

arra yad avpnoti

yac cpy utkrmatvara
ghtvaitni sayti
vyur gandhn ivayt
The living entity in the material world
carries his different conceptions of
life from one body to another as the
air carries aromas. Thus he takes
one kind of body and again quits it
to take another 15.8

rotra caku sparana ca

rasana ghram eva ca
adhihya mana cya
viayn upasevate
The living entity, thus taking another
gross body, obtains a certain type
of ear, eye, tongue, nose and sense
of touch, which are grouped about
the mind. He thus enjoys a
particular set of sense objects 15.9

THERAPY
uddhared tmantmna
ntmnam avasdayet
tmaiva hy tmano bandhur
tmaiva ripur tmana
One must deliver himself with the help of
his mind, and not degrade himself. The
mind is the friend of the conditioned
soul, and his enemy as well 6.5

brahmay dhya karmi

saga tyaktv karoti ya
lipyate na sa ppena
padma-patram ivmbhas
One who performs his duty without
attachment, surrendering the results
unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected
by sinful action, as the lotus leaf is
untouched by water 5.10
