DATA SCALE OF TODAY

DATA COLLECTED IN 60
SECONDS

There were 5 Exabytes of

information created between the
dawn of civilization through 2003,
but that much information is now
created every 2 days

DIFINITION OF BIGDATA
Bigdata Is a relative concept

Big data is a term for data sets that are so large or complex that traditional
data processing applications are inadequate

Big data is like teenage sex:

Everyone talks about it
Nobody really knows how to do it
Everyone thinks everyone else is
doing it
So everyone claims they are doing
it

Why would you want to implement Big Data in your company?

Data that your human resource cant handle
easily:

Purpose
that
cant
mathematical modeling:

be

solved

by

The data is too much to be analyzed by your

employee (volume)
The data is from too many sources and
hence difficult to analyze (variety)
The data is captured at such a velocity, that
the employee cant keep up (velocity)
Early adopters of Big Data are mostly B2C
companies. Why?
Currently, 70% of the data created in the
world are by individuals. B2C companies
already had access to large amounts of data.

Managerial Perspective

B2B Business will start embracing Big Data with the advancements in IoTs.
Government and NGOs and Individuals will start embracing big data as more
public data sets are created for eg: data.gov.sg, Panama Papers.
Purpose will drive the need for Big Data and Big Data will drive deeper
understanding and quicker decisions.

Would Big Data steal our jobs? Who is bound to lose?

Not all problems are Big Data problems.
Big Data Analytics can only tell us what is
happening. Not why it is happening.
Big Data lacks human bias, but it has data bias.
The data you feed it, the question you ask it
decides the utility of it.

Currently, Big Data analysis is filling in where humans

cant handle the data (volume, variety, velocity).
But as the technology becomes a commodity, it will
take over the jobs of people who previously handled
smaller amount of data. For eg:
Diagnostic Doctors - Those who check ex-rays and
identify whether you have a tuberculosis or not.
Finance Analysts, Fund/Wealth managers, Credit
Raters
Who is bound to win?
Big Data deep divers, Data Scientists, Coders (R,
Python)
Fields where knowledge is growing at a rapid pace.
Material Scientists

Would Big Data improve or intrude their lives?

Big data is not just for marketing and targeting
ads to customers.
Big Data will play an important role in health
and fitness.
Big Data can help in security. Like prevent credit
card frauds, account hacks etc. based on user
patterns.
Can help in organizing your data (videos,
audios, photos) for you, as digital image and
video processing improves.
Enable you in travel, wealth management,
productivity etc.

Big Data doesnt imply privacy and security

threat. But poor decisions by firms and unethical
behavior by firms may lead to privacy and
security issues.
Data already exists. Big Data enables the mining
of such data.
Over-reliance on Big Data may lead you to live in
a bubble, with lower chances of discoverability of
new things.
Paralysis by analysis syndrome.
No choice to opt out of Big Data.
