CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Introduction

Accidents in highway commonly happen most

of the time.

Some of the safety devices on the highway

were made for safety purpose, sometimes these
devices could be killer machines on the road.

About Plasmatic Guardrail, this project idea is

to give a minimum impact from collisions.
Instead of fatal accident, this device will help
saving precious lives.

Problem Statement

So many tragic accident involving vehicle

Accident involving guardrail
Repeated with high rates during the festive
season

Main purpose of the guardrail

To protect the vehicle from falling out of cliff or
exceeding to the other side of the road.
For a motorcyclist the guardrail are like a killer
machine during accident

Objective
To produce guardrail cover using plastic and
polystyrene.
To identify the collision impact between
vehicle and the guardrail.
To compare time of impact collision between
guardrail cover using plastic & polystyrene
and conventional.

Scope of Study

Produce Guardrail
EDH Plastic + Expanded Polystyrene
2 meter length

Lab Test in MIROS

Collision Impact Test
Test Level TL 2 & TL 3
W-Beam Guardrails

Chapter 2
Literature review

What is guardrail

a strong fence at the side of a road or in the

middle of an expressway, intended to
reduce the risk of serious accidents.

CONVENTIONAL GUARDRAIL

Guard rails and posts have a durable

galvanizedsteelfinish. Rails are made for
high impact resistance

Recycle Product

Type of plastic
High density polyethylene (HDPE)
Up to 280 degree celcius
Hard and resistance to impact

(G.P Thomas, 2013)

Type of polystyrene
Moisture resistance
Lightweight
Resistance to impact

(havnevik 2010)

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

The methodology is divided into

several stages
Collect data and information related to the
review.
Making observations in previous research.
Study the record of the frequency of accidents
on the road involving iron barricades.
Conducting full-scale tests in a laboratory
impact provided by MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF
ROAD SAFETY RESEARCH (Miros) to determine
the level of effectiveness barriers that will be
generated.

Site observation in factory quality

control.

Observations were made in the laboratory

of crash test that provide by MIROS

PRESTAR* factory that making local guardrail

Design products

Design guardrail covered with plastic and

polystrine.

Prototype in making
Recycle material * HDPE plastic and EPS
polystyrene.
recycle center located at section 17, Shah
Alam.
molding at Mti PLASTECH sdn bhd at section
16, Shah Alam.
Polystyrene that have number six in a triangle
as a mark.
combine both material and install this
prototype at conventional w-beam guardrail
and do crash test at MIROS.

Testing a prototype.
Crash test objective basically to test our
prototype either it could make the time of
impact become longer and more
absorption of the impact that acted on it
or not.
Tl test, t2,t3
C test.
