Definition of Sunnah

• Literally means  clear path or a beaten track

• Technically means  all that is narrated from the
Prophet s.a.w including his actions, sayings and
whatever he has tacitly approved.
Relationship between Sunnah
& Hadis
• Sunnah – includes the sayings, doings and
tacit approvals of the Prophet s.a.w
• Hadis – narration of the sayings of the
Prophet s.a.w
• Hadis in this sense is part of Sunnah which is
wider in meaning
Authority of Sunnah

• Sunnah can be considered as a type of revelation

Allah to His Prophet s.a.w.

“Nor does he say (ought) his own desire. It is no

less than inspiration sent down to him” (al-
Najm:3-4)

“And whatever the Messenger gives you, take

(observe) it and whatever he forbids you, abstain
from it” (al-Hashr:7)
WHAT QURAN SAYS ABOUT AS-SUNNAH?
LET FIND OUT!! 
ACCORDING TO AS-SYAFIEE
There`re 3 areas related to the roles of Sunnah based to
Quran..

1)Sunnah reemphasises the injunctions of Quran.

-With means Sunnah supported what Quran says.
Eg:
Surah an-nisaa 29:
`O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly
except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent. And do not kill
yourselves (nor kill the other). Surely Allah is most merciful to you.

From the verse above, Quran tell us 2 things:

-Do not eat someone property without permission
-Do not kill ourselves and the others.
Now… Let see what Sunnah says according to the above
verse:
Rasullullah saw say:
It`s lawful to posses the property of a muslim without his
express consent.
To which we discuss, this hadith supported the verse above.

2) Sunnah explains and elaborates the concise injunctions

of Quran
-Which mean Sunnah give further explanation and clear
comprehension about the verses from Quran .
Eg:
Surah al-baqarah 11:
And perform salah and give zakah and whatever of good (deed) you
send forth for yourselves before you…..
From the verse above, Quran tell us to do:
- As- salah
- Az-zakah
But, just from the verse, we do not know how to manage and pay az-zakah, so that, we
can refer to Sunnah that give clear explanation about how to handle with zakah.
Now… Let see what Sunnah says according to the above verse:

Narrated by abu Sa`id al-Khudri, Rasullullah saw said: ` No zakah is imposed on less than
5 Awsuq (1 wasaq = 60 sa` and 1 sa` = 3kg) of dates. And no zakah is imposed on
less than 5 awaq (200 dirhams) of silver and no zakah is imposed on less than 5
camels.`

3) Sunnah qualified the unqualified verses of Quran as well as specified

the general injunctions of Quran.
Arabic words:
- Qualify = muqayyadah - Unqualify = mutlaq
- Specified = takhsis - General = `amm
