SIX SIGMA AT ENGRO

Engro

is among the first Pakistani companies implementing six sigma

across all areas and utilizing it as a management system to execute our
strategic objectives. Six sigma was launched in February 2006.
Among the focus areas, employee development is the most critical and
six sigma will be leveraged to help bring out the best in our people.
Employees drive improvements in other areas: speed, innovation,
perfection and becoming world class.
Six sigmas robust problem-solving methodology and statistical tool
allows the company to benchmark processes against global standards
in a language that is comparable across any industry or function.
It helps ensure that we sustain our promise of delivering high quality
products and services to our customers on time, every time.
Communication

is critical and Engro conducted six sigma launch events

country wide as well as two internal conferences and electronic and
print updates throughout the year management and non management
employees were trained extensively during 2006 & 2007 on six sigma
principles.

ROLE OF LEADERS
What role is played by leaders in TQM???

leadership play a role in improving quality management and

Total Quality Management is just another piece of the puzzle and
overhauling their total quality assurance department.
Engro have leaders of high integrity, energy and enthusiasm who
have the necessary managerial, professional and people skills to
inspire a group or organization to set high goals and achieve
them willingly.
Engro believe that leadership skills need to be strengthened at all
levels within our organizations and that managerial and
professionalism is a necessary foundation.

BENCHMARKING ATENGRO FOODS

Engro Foods certainly believes in benchmarking inorder to achieve a better

standardofperformance.
When the organization was being established back in March 2006, the company
and in particular its dynamic supply chain team had two options regarding the
benchmarkfor the company operations.
It had a choice between Nestles extensive and well reputedMilkCollection
Centre system, or Haleeb Foods contractor based milk collection mechanism.
It chose Nestle as a benchmarkand therefore set up its own milk
collectioncentres based on the layout and approach adopted by the well
entrenched Nestle.
However, today Engro Foods considers itself in no need of a benchmark anymore
since it has actually surpassed the performance of its competitors and therefore
now it is viewingits own previous performance as the standard to work
against.

IMPORTANCE OF TEAMWORK

OLPERS believe that high performing teams containing

appropriate diversity can achieve what individuals alone
cannot. Consciously using the diversity of style, approach
and skill afforded by teams is strength we must
continuous building into our organization.

TOTAL QUALITY
CONTROL(TQC)
QUALITY CONTROL AT ENGRO FOODS
Before Processing
Lab

tests are conductedin order to check themilk for any adulteration

and in fact the dhodhis are also educated to avoidadulteration of milk.

Once

the milk is approvedand dispatched within 6 hours to either the

Sahiwal or Sukkur plant, the next Quality check is carried out right at the
time of milk reception at the plant where it is once again examined by
qualified Chemists.
It is only after the milk clears certain tests that the Quality Control
department accepts it and transfers it to the cooling plants.

TOTAL QUALITY
CONTROL(TQC)
After Processing

Quality control experts are involved throughout the production process. After
the packaging process is complete, Quality control resurfaces this time not only
to ensure that the packages are sterilized but also to ensure that the milk
packages are of the prescribed weight.

And after a final approval, the milk products areconsidered fit for deliveryand
transferred to the warehouse.

The organization strives to achieve even betterand better quality of the

products which is why it collaborates with various research agencies to work
onthe development of theproducts.

QUALITY CIRCLE
There are three steps in quality circle;
1) KPI

(KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATOR)

2) PPI

(PROCESS PERFORMANCE INDICATOR)

3) DRIVERS

QUALITY CIRCLE
KPI

(KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATOR)

A key performance indicator (KPI) is a specific measure of anorganization's performance in some area of its
business. InENGROupper level managers or team leaders are using KPIs. They made the policies, rules and
regulations.
PPI

(PROCESS PERFORMANCE INDICATOR)

Process Performance Indicator is used by the plant managers. Plant managers used PPIs to ensure that there should
be no gap in manufacturing process and everything is going smoothly. workers to different tasks. Plant manager
calls upon the meeting with the upper level management and discuss the currentissues.
DRIVERS
Drivers are used by workers. Workers are actually implementing the rules which are designed bythe upper
levelmanagement. Plant manager checks the level of the issue, if the issue is out of his capacity; he schedules a
meeting with the upperlevel management.

CONCLUSION
Engro is going to be a market leader due to different reason like its financial
position, product quality, R & D, market share, sales growth etc. Its price is more
or less equal to its competitors, it matches its quality with its competitors and
capturing its competitors share from market. Engro is using its brand name and
its packaging is good to promote its products and EFL is becoming very popular
as compared to its competitors.
