PLANNING AND

DEVELOPMENT ISSUES

Course #1:
Introduction

Bakcground
This course will be focused on a number of issues that recently
become the references of debates and discussion, both in
conceptual and practical arena of planning and development.
In particular, it will highlight the global issues related with
current modes of urbanization and its implications. The modes
aim to resolve poverty and inequality suggest that approaching
sustainable development needs a better understanding the
issues from many angles.
In the context of urbanization in Indonesia, the emergence of cityregions and the problems of managing the inter-districts
border areas are specific subjects collected from some cases in
Indonesia will be examined in the class to enrich the
discussion on development governance.
Empirical findings of some research will be discussed in order to
provide actual situation that could bring the concept and theory
more realistic and grounded.
Hopefully, some topics taken in this course could be further
explored in the master thesis project.

Aim of the Course


This course aims to give insights of such actual
issues relating with planning and
development, especially with regards to the
problems that characterize the development
practices in less developed nations. In more
specific, at the end of this course, the students are
expected to be able to explain following things such
as:
Issues on development and planning, particularly with
regards to urbanization;
Theoretical context in general level that are closely
related with planning and development issues;
The emerging implications that could be identified in
order to understand the causal relationship of those issues.

the UNDIP internet line.

It is not allowed to choose the same article with


the others.
Write a critical review to your chosen article.
The article is not more than 10 pages, with Times
New Roman font 12; and line spacing 1,5.
The article have to be submitted on 22
