MX2 Training Program - Displaying Data Overview

The MX2 data view area displays the various ultrasonic data views with
preconfigured layouts.
A data view is a 2D graphical representation of the ultrasonic data with a ruler or
scale corresponding to the horizontal and vertical axis.
Data views available in the MX2 are:
-

A-scan. Ultrasound axis vs. amplitude axis.

B-scan. Ultrasound axis vs. scan axis.
S-scan. Ultrasound axis vs. index axis.
C-scan (0 degree or linear angle) Index axis
vs. scan axis.
C-scan (S-scan) Focal law vs. scan axis.
Strip charts.
Ray tracing.

A layout is a preconfigured window with

one or more data views.
Pictured to the left is the A-S-[C] layout
pictured with multi-group (Skew 90 and
270) configuration typical of the Cobra
small diameter piping inspection.

MX2 Training Program - A-scan Data View

The A-scan is the source from which all other views are created.
The A-scan data view is the 2D waveform representation of the received
ultrasonic pulse amplitude vs. time of flight.
The MX2 uses an 8 bit (0-100% amplitude) resolution for the digitized Ascan and 10 bit (0-200% amplitude) for the gate readings and C-scan.
Amplitude axis resolution between 0-100% is 0.4% (256 lines \ 100
increments)
Horizontal axis resolution is determined by the UT range and point
quantity entered in UT>Advanced>Points. (MX2 default is 320 points)

MX2 Training Program Displaying Data A-scan Point Quantity

The higher the point quantity the better the resolution on the A-scan.
The point quantity is a compromise between file size and A-scan resolution.
320-640 points is sufficient for the most common inspections and ensures
precision readings.
The A-scan point
quantity default setting
is 320 points and can
be modified in
UT>Advanced>Point
Quantity.
The higher the point
count, the better the
flaw characterization.

MX2 Training Program - Displaying Data - Amplitude Color Palette

The A-scan is the data view from which all other views are based. The B-scan
S-scan, and C-scab convert amplitude to color coded pixels based on the 2D
views.
The C-scan can be configured for an amplitude or position 2D representation of
the A-scan data.
The ruler to the right displays the MX2 default amplitude color palette. 0 -100%
amplitude vs. a scaled color palette typical of amplitude based acceptance
criteria.

11

MX2 Training Program - Displaying Data - Color Palette cont.

The MX2 flashcard contains additional color palettes for applications such
as corrosion mapping, RF rectified data, TOFD, and other color schemes.
The MX2 color palette can be changed in Display>Properties>
Category>Color Palette>Load.
Custom color palettes can also be created from third party software such
as the Eclipse Scientific ESPalette Program (www.eclipsescientific.com)
and loaded from the flash card. (User\palette folder)

12

MX2 Training Program - Displaying Data - S-scan

The MX2 S-scan is a 2D end view of ultrasound data presenting all A-scans within
the group in an angular sector or sweep range creating a cross section of the
inspection.
The A-scans are converted to color coded lines representing amplitude and are
corrected for delay and true depth relative to the ultrasonic axis.
Higher A-scan density (Focal Law>Beam>Angle Step) results greater resolution.
All information contained in the A-scan can be visualized in the S-scan. Point
quantity and amplitude resolution are not compromised.
The S-scan is also a form of D-scan or end view. (Ultrasound axis vs. index axis)

The MX2 B-scan data view represents the ultrasonic data with a projection of the
scan axis and the ultrasound axis for one focal law or A-scan only.
The vertical ultrasound axis is generated from the complete A-scan range (Not gate
range) and the horizontal scan axis is generated from the movement of the probe.
The B-scan is an uncorrected data view that allows the skip lines (B0, T1, etc) and
gate position to be displayed on the data.
The TOFD B-scan is explained in detail in the TOFD special applications section.

MX2 Training Program B-scan for Weld Inspection

Using the A-B-[C] layout, a common weld analysis strategy is to use the data
function key to display the angle selector parameter in the upper left indication
area and using the scroll knob, toggle through each angle while dynamically
visualizing the B-scan.
This type of B-scan analysis is particularly useful for characterizing crack tips and
for separating geometric reflectors such as the weld root and cap from weld flaws.

MX2 Training Program Displaying Data- C-scan Overview

The type of C-scan available for the group depends on the type of focal law
configuration that was selected during the group and focal law wizard or in the
Focal Law>Configuration>LawConfig parameter. There are 3 options:
1. Sectorial Angular Sector (MX2 default S-scan)
2. Linear Sector (E-scan at angle)
3. Linear at 0 degrees (E-scan at 0 degrees)

The C-scan is generated based on the gate position and gate mode. C-scans can
be configured for gate A and gate B independently.

For all three options listed above

both amplitude and position Cscans are available.
The C-scan gate data can be
saved independently with or
without the digitized A-scan.
Saving only the C-scan data
results in faster acquisition speed
and smaller data file size.
File saving options are covered in
the inspection preparation section.

20

MX2 Training Program Uncorrected Amplitude C-scan

Focal laws 45-70

For the S-scan weld inspection, the

amplitude C-scan is defined by the
vertical focal law axis and the
horizontal scan axis. (Focal laws 45-70
vs. probe movement)
For each focal law, the pixel color is
determined by the peak amplitude
signal in gate A for that position on the
scan axis. 1 pixel = 1 A-scan.
The primary function of the amplitude
C-scan for weld inspection is data
screening and flaw length sizing.

Scan Axis (Probe movement)

22

MX2 Training Program Linear at 0 Degree Position C-scan

Index axis (mm)

For the linear at 0 inspection typical of

corrosion mapping (HydroFORM), both the
amplitude and position C-scans are
defined by the vertical index axis in mm
(Green) and the horizontal scan axis in
mm (Blue). Virtual probe aperture vs.
probe movement)
The pixel color is generated by the position
or TOF of the signal in gate A for that
position on the scan axis. (Pixel =
thickness A/ - I/)
The primary function of the position Cscan is thickness readings, corrosion
analysis and delamination sizing.
Probe E-scan

23

Scan Axis (Probe movement)

When the C-scan data view is set to thickness (Position C-scan) the pixel
color is determined based on the position (TOF) of the signal in the gate.
In the example below the depth range for the thickness color palette is set
from 7-11mm and the color palette is scaled over that range.
A red C in the MX2 indication area indicates that more data points than
available pixels exist in the C-scan and one pixel may represent many data
points.
Color palette compression ensures that the most relevant data point
(thinnest or highest amplitude) is displayed on the C-scan and B-scan data
views.

MX2 Training Program Multi C-scan Layouts

The MX2 has single group layouts that allow two C-scans to be viewed
simultaneously for both amplitude and position in any combination of gate A or B.
C-scan analysis is covered in detail in the corrosion and composite inspection
sections.

26

MX2 Training Program Displaying Data - Ray Tracing

The ray tracing data view is a 2D

representation of the wedge and weld
corrected for rebounds displaying the
beam path and gate A position for the
first, last, and currently active focal
law or A-scan.
The beam path for the current focal
law will display a colored circle at the
volumetric position of the maximum
amplitude signal in gate A.
The ray tracing is primarily a
reporting tool and is dependent on
the operator selecting the correct Ascan and gate position for the
displayed flaw.
The number of selected legs will limit
the display based on part thickness.
The ray tracing tool is covered in
detail in the indication table and
reporting section.
