HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
Maslow'shierarchy of needsis a theory in psychology proposed
by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper "A THEORY OF
HUMAN MOTIVATION" in Psychological Review. Maslow
subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of
humans' inborn curiosity.
Hierarchy of Needs suggests that people are motivated to fulfill
basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs.
This hierarchy is most often displayed as a pyramid. The lowest
levels of the pyramid are made up of the most basic needs,
while the more complex needs are located at the top of the
pyramid.
PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
Physiological Needsare the foundation of Maslow's
hierarchy of needs. It include survivalneedssuch as
theneedfor sleep, food, air, water and
reproduction.Physiological needsare the
requirements we all needindividually for human
survival.
Sleep 264 hours(11 days)
Food 3 weeks (21 days)
Oxygen 25 minutes
Water 1 week (8 to 10 days)
SAFETY NEEDS
SAFETY: A MOST
POWERFUL NEED
When frightened, our
thoughts and energies
are diverted.
Threat of, or actual
attack creates fight
or flight reaction.
Threats to safety can
be physical or
emotional.
A MOST POWERFUL
NEED
ESTEEM NEEDS
SELF ACTUALIZATION
SELF-ACTUALIZATION
NEEDS
Stop cruelty and exploitation.
Encourage talent in others.
Try to be a good human being.
Do work one considers worthwhile.
Enjoy taking on responsibilities.
Prefer basic satisfaction.
Seek truth.
Give unselfish love.
Be just fair with yourself.
SELF-ACTUALIZATION:
THE HIGHEST
GROWTH NEED
Conclusion
The basis of Abraham Harold Maslow's motivation
theory is that human beings are motivated by
unsatisfied needs, and that certain lower factors
need to be satisfied before higher needs can be
satisfied. According to Abraham Harold Maslow,
there are general types of needs (physiological,
survival, safety, love, and esteem) that must be
satisfied before a person can act unselfishly.
He called these needs "deficiency needs." As long
as we are motivated to satisfy these cravings, we
are moving towards growth, toward selfactualization. Satisfying needs is healthy, while
preventing satisfaction makes us sick or act evilly.
