Oxidation
Oxidationisthebreakdownofmineralsexposedtoa
oxygen-richenvironment.Thisismostobviouswithminerals
richinelementslikeiron.
Remember,ironinrocksismainlyFe2+.
Whenrocksweather,theironisoxidizedtoFe3+,producing
redstainingfrommineralslikehematite(Fe2O3).

Oxygeninnaturehasa-2charge.IfhematiteisFe2O3,then

structureofhematitemustbe+3charged.
