BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING:

THE LIVING ENGINEERING

By: Ji Hun Yang

WHAT IS BIOMEDICAL
ENGINEERING?
A young, underdog of the engineering field
Applies engineering principles to the fields of biology and medicine
Develop systems, equipment and devices for biological research purposes

HISTORY
Although it is Young according to many, it can be traced back
thousands of year (prosthetics)
The young aspects of the field covers the genetic engineering and
modifications
Plays a crucial role in current day agriculture

WHAT DOES IT COVER?

Biology Aspects
Genetically superior agriculture
Biosynthetic fuel
Genetic Engineering

Mechanical Aspects
Prosthetics
Exoskeletal support structures
Medical Appliances

CAREER
Pharm research
Professors
Toxicologists
Biomedical Researchers
M.D. candidacy
This is because the biomedical engineering undergraduate curriculum fulfills
the pre-med requirements in majority of the cases

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
(UNDERGRADUATE)
Biology
Molecular Biology
Genetics

Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Biochemistry

Physics
Biophysics

Calculus
Multivariable
Linear Algebra
Vector Calculus

COST OF EDUCATION
Four year B.S. required
Approximately 40k-65k per year dependent on the school

Option of getting Masters degree

60k+ per year for two years at most institutions

SALARY/OUTLOOK
Market Growth
Projected 27% increase between 2012-2022
Higher growth rate than average career
Top three fastest growth rate in engineering careers

The statistics for median pay at mid-career

87K average pay for a B.S.

95k-105k average pay for a M.S.
110k+ average pay for a Ph.D
200+ average for M.D.
Depends on specialization

SOCIETAL IMPACT
Advancement in serving veterans
Agricultural development (in conjunction with agricultural engineering)
Improved medical procedure
Faster recovery rate
Decreased fatality rate
Improved style of living

SUMMARY
Biomedical engineering is a career running for the future
One of the top paying and fastest growing careers despite recession
Many positive societal impact
Shorter education time compared to most careers in its pay grade
