This is the first movement of the piston. The piston starts at the top,
the intake valve opens, and the piston moves down to let the engine
take in a cylinder a fuel/air mixture.
During this stroke, all valves are closed. The piston moves back up to
compress the fuel/air mixture.
Just before the piston reaches the top of its stroke; the spark plug
emits a spark to ignite the fuel. The fuel charge in the cylinder
explodes, pushing the piston down.
In this last stroke, during the last upward movement of the piston the
exhaust valve is open. The piston forces all of the burned gasses
from the previous explosion, out of the cylinder. The cycle is
completed and it can begin again.
