What is the formula
for the success of the
Health & Fitness Program?
ICE = SUCCESS
I = INVOLVEMENT
C = COMMITMENT
E = ENVIRONMENT
I = INVOLVEMENT
Employee involvement in decisions affecting health and fitness is essential to the
success of any health and fitness program. Involving employees will bring out insights
and energy to help achieve program goals and objectives.

Employee participation should include:

• providing suggestions regarding the health & fitness program
• understanding safety procedures and rules
• immediately reporting any safety concerns
• immediately reporting injuries and illnesses
• working out and playing in a safe and responsible manner
• participating in recreational activities
• becoming involved in Community Spirit

Employee involvement should be manifested by active participation in and support of

the health and fitness program.

ICE = SUCCESS
C = COMMITMENT

A successful health and fitness program will begin with management committed to
the implementation of the program. Management must provide authority, personnel,
resources and full active support for any program to be successful. Everyone should
understand that management is making a serious commitment to placing health and
fitness on the same or higher level of importance as production or service – that health
And fitness is of paramount importance.

Management commitment should consist of:

• written policies and procedures
• resources to support the program
• an understanding of responsibilities and duties
• the appointment of qualified, responsible parties
• encouraging employee involvement
• supervision
• program review
• recognition and reward for a job well done

ICE = SUCCESS
E = ENVIRONMENT
The environment includes the health and fitness facility and the employees, clients or
members , but also requires the proper atmosphere and teamwork. The environment is not
just a building and people, but an attitude to become healthy and fit.

The environment necessary for a successful health & fitness program

includes a number of elements:

• well designed and equipped health & fitness center

•essential staff
•employees with an attitude - an attitude to be:

•healthy and fit

•team oriented
•more productive to themselves, family and community

ICE = SUCCESS

What are the Benefits of the
Health & Fitness Program
HEALTH & FITNESS BENEFITS

Since 1980, there have been over 50 studies of comprehensive

work site health promotion and disease prevention programs.
Every study has indicated positive health outcomes.

97% of these studies that were analyzed for cost

outcomes proved cost effective. In fact, research shows
that these programs are a great investment.

HEALTH & FITNESS BENEFITS
“Keeping our employees healthy and safe is our moral duty and brings economic benefits.”
Safety, Health and Environment brochure

THE THREE MEASURABLE FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTED TO

COST BENEFITS ARE:

Health Care Cost Reduction - More than 50% of the after-tax profit of business is
spent on employee medical care. Evidence is overwhelming and conclusive that corporate health
promotion programs reduce the use of company-funded health care services, thus demonstrating
that such programs are a necessity in the current and future corporate environment.

Increased Employee Productivity - In a world where corporate profitability is

measured through optimally streamlining resources, employee productivity is a crucial variable
in the equation. Research demonstrates that health promotion programs will positively improve
employee effectiveness and productivity.

Reduced Employee Absenteeism - In addition to increasing employee productivity,

a corporate health & fitness program will also increase the number of hours worked per year. Research
demonstrates that these programs create a work force that is in better health and more motivated.

In addition, such programs will translate into increased employee morale and will attract
a higher caliber of new staff.
HEALTH & FITNESS BENEFITS
The overwhelming benefits of health & fitness programs will mean nothing unless
they are cost effective. Research shows that these programs are, in fact, a great
investment.

•Coors Brewing reports a return on investment from $1.24 to $8.33 for every dollar

was returned for every dollar spent.(28)

weight and body fat, and gained muscle mass. I feel better than I have in

that my wife and son have watched me over the weeks and they both have

“The Health & Fitness Center is an integral and essential component in fulfilling the
business priority to “Attract, Retain and Develop Talent.”

The benefits from a properly equipped, staffed and operated Health & Fitness Center and
Program are far-ranging, encompassing much more than health and fitness and such a
program pays for itself.

It is well proven and understood that a healthy and fit workforce has fewer accidents,
illnesses and injuries, and lost workdays, all leading to reduced worker’s compensation
claims and insurance premiums, and lower training and worker replacement costs.

Also, in addition to these benefits, employees involved in the health & fitness program learn
interpersonal skills which carry over to and benefit their work, such as how to
become team players by working together for a common goal.

A workforce provided with the proper health & fitness program is a workforce that will be
more energized and more productive. This will be not only of great benefit, but also of
great benefit to the individual employees, their families and the community.

With over 14 years of in-depth experience developing and implementing health and fitness
programs specifically for employees with programs that encourage employees participation,
as evidenced by a higher rate of participation than other companies, I feel that I am
uniquely qualified to lead the continued effort to advance the priorities and goals in part,
through a complete health & fitness program.”
